Alex Cox, who was 51 when he died, was found to have died from the cause that was first found in his autopsy. It said that his death was a natural one. His family said in a statement that they believed the report and that rumors made it harder for them to deal with their grief. Cox was Lori Vallow’s brother, and the police say that he shot Lori’s ex-husband Charles Vallow in self-defense.
Lori Vallow is charged with murder in connection with the deaths of her two children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, who was seven years old, and Tylee Ryan, who was sixteen years old. She is also charged with conspiracy to commit homicide in connection with the death of Charles Vallow. Chad Daybell, Lori Vallow’s husband, has also been charged in connection with the deaths of their children. Five days after the funeral for Chad Daybell’s late wife, Tammy Daybell, Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell tied the knot. Here is what you should know:
Who is Alex Cox?
Alexander “Alex” Lamar Cox was born on January 18, 1968, to fervent Mormon parents Janis Lee Cox and Barry Lynn Cox (Lori is their fourth child). His mother, Janis, said of him in the documentary series that “[he] was just really funny.” He tried his hand at stand-up comedy because that was what he always saw himself doing, but fate had other ideas. He was very loyal to his sisters and would resort to violence in an instant if he thought he was protecting one of them or her honor.
As evidence, in 2007, after learning that Lori’s third husband, Joseph “Joe” Ryan, was abusive to her and their young children, he tasered and threatened to kill Ryan. Official documents show that Alex pled guilty to the attack and served 90 days in prison in Austin, Texas, but it appears that he has never apologized for or shown any regret for his actions. According to the Netflix original, he even addressed this topic in a stand-up routine by asking the audience, “have you ever [done] something that you believed was the correct thing to do, but it turns out… [to be] a felony?”
This explains why, after learning there was a conflict between Lori and her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, Alex also attacked him, resulting in Vallow’s death by gunshot. What happened is unknown because he was initially not charged because of his claims of self-defense, and now Lori is facing a conspiracy to commit murder accusation in which her brother is named. It’s also worth noting that Alex is named as the masked man who tried to shoot Lori’s new partner’s ex-wife, Tammy Daybelll, with a paintball pistol on October 9, 2019, according to court records.
Within 30 minutes after her brother shot and killed her husband, police say Lori Vallow “then went to Burger King to get food for JJ, Walgreens to get flip flops for her and Tylee and finally returned home.” (12) pic.twitter.com/Um7kvwUt2r

How Did Alex Cox Die?
Alex was found lying on the floor of his restroom on December 12, 2019, and was reportedly gasping for air before being rushed to Banner Gateway Hospital in Gilbert, Arizona. The 51-year-old was choking on vomit when medical personnel came, but they were unable to save him. He was later declared dead. His wife of a month and a half, Zulema Pastenes (whose surname he adopted), reported to authorities that he had been sick since somewhere around December 6 but had rejected medical attention.
Instead, Zulema said, Alex traveled to Mexico to obtain prescription medicines since they were cheaper there, but he still had trouble breathing after returning. Everything ended tragically on that Thursday, but they took comfort in the fact that he had gotten a priesthood blessing (allegedly from his Chad Daybell) over the telephone on the day he went. His autopsy revealed that Alex died of natural causes, specifically lung blood clots and hypertension.
Alex’s gadgets were very helpful in the investigation into the abduction of his niece Tylee Ryan and nephew JJ Vallow, even if he was unable to be extensively questioned about their disappearance. His phone showed that he was in the Daybell backyard for almost two hours on September 9, 2019 – the day after 16-year-old Tylee was last seen alive, prompting a search of the area. In fact, there is where the near-skeletal remains of both her and her 7-year-old brother were discovered, but Alex can’t be formally indicted for their deaths.
Police believe Alex Cox shot Charles Vallow while he was lying on the floor. He also shot twice while Charles was standing.
“The shot into Charles’ body as he laid on the floor and the delay in calling 911 would also validate their desire for him to die.” (11) pic.twitter.com/73LD63ZK6w
