How Long Did It Take to Make Avatar 2?
If you want a straight answer, there have been 13 years between the first film and this one, but the film hasn’t been in production for all of those years. After Avatar did well at the box office, director James Cameron said he would start designing and planning the film’s sequels, which were supposed to come out in 2014 and 2015. Cameron wanted to try new things with the movie, like filming at a higher frame rate, using unique underwater camerawork and technology, rewriting the script often, and making more sequels, bringing the total number of sequels from two to four. Cameron kept adding more to his plate and putting off making the movie because he wanted to do bigger and better things.
Avatar: The Way of Water’s filming took a long time. The primary filming started in September 2017, the same as the primary filming for Avatar 3. Both movies were shot simultaneously to save money because their plots naturally fit together. Motion capture took more than a year to finish because so much CGI work was needed for the project. It was finally done in November 2018. Even so, that was only for the scenes with motion capture.
Live-action filming hadn’t even started yet. It began in 2019 in New Zealand but was put on hold indefinitely in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which stopped all filming worldwide. The production had to be on hold for about three months and won’t start again until June 2020. Cameron said in September 2020 that filming was done, giving the movie three years to be made before visual effects and computer-generated imagery (CGI) were added. Visual effects and CGI were added in November 2022, one month before the movie was released in theatres.
Now you know three different answers to the question of how long it took to make Avatar 2: The Way of Water. From the time it was announced until it came out, it took about 13 years to complete. From the time they started filming until the movie came out, it took about five years. If you only care about how long it took to make the movie and how long it took to film, it took three years. No matter how you look at it, Avatar: The Way of Water took a long time to make, and since its sequel has already been filmed, it will have taken even longer to make and get out.
The motion picture event of a generation is finally here.
