Francis Lawrence’s 2007 action thriller “I Am Legend” features Will Smith as US Army virologist Robert Neville. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic version of New York City and is loosely based on a novel by Richard Matheson from 1954. Most of humanity has been wiped off by a virus that was first discovered to treat cancer, and the survivors have become nocturnal mutants.
Being immune to the virus, Neville ends up being the sole human in New York, where he must fight off hostile mutants while searching for a cure. This movie is the third to adapt Matheson’s book; the first two were produced in 1964 and 1971.
In 1994, “I Am Legend” started to take shape, with a number of filmmakers and actors involved. However, script-related budgetary issues caused production to be delayed. At last, in 2006, filming took place in New York City, with a $5 million scene at the Brooklyn Bridge among the highlights.
On December 14, 2007, the film was released in both North America and the United States. It broke the record for the biggest box office debut for a non-Christmas movie released in December (without accounting for inflation). With $256 million earned domestically and $329 million earned overseas, for a total of $585 million, it was the seventh-highest grossing movie in 2007.
While Will Smith’s performance was praised in particular, the film was mostly well-received by critics who pointed out how it differed from the novel, particularly in the conclusion.
It was disclosed in 2022 that a sequel was being worked on. In addition to co-producing the movie alongside Michael B. Jordan, who will also play a major part, Will Smith is scheduled to return to the character of Robert Neville.
I Am Legend Alternate Ending Explained
Things are a little bit different and much deeper in “I Am Legend’s” alternate ending than they were in the original. It turns out that the afflicted animals, known as Darkseekers, are sentient. Will Smith’s character, Robert Neville, the protagonist, comes to understand that they are sentient entities with feelings and thoughts rather than just mindless monsters.
Neville had been doing some very rigorous tests, including the abduction of a female subject for examination. The creatures attack his location in order to save their friend, not to hurt him. Neville is deeply shaken by this realization and begins to wonder if he has been acting morally.
In the alternate ending, the creatures depart amicably after recovering their friend, in contrast to the original ending in which Neville gives his life to save others. This revelation changes Neville, so he takes the medication and leaves with the other survivors for Vermont.
Because it adds more depth to the plot and remains true to the original novel, the variant ending became rather popular. Because to popular demand, the sequel, “I Am Legend 2,” will have this different conclusion.
Not everyone loved the original ending, in which Neville gives himself up. Test viewers’ opinions were divided, with some believing it missed the book’s moral message, which goes beyond simply battling zombies.
With “I Am Legend 2,” they are now pursuing a different conclusion to carry on the narrative. The issue of Will Smith’s character surviving is resolved, and fans can’t wait to find out what happens next.
The sequel is anticipated to go into further depth regarding Neville’s post-survivor actions and his treatment of the cure, yet these questions remain. It’s significant because the different conclusion deepens the significance of the tale and pave the way for an intriguing follow-up.
