Since iOS 16 adds support for getting around CAPTCHAs incompatible applications and websites, tapping on images of traffic lights or reading squiggly text to show you are human may soon be a much less common annoyance for iPhone users.
Although it’s hardly the worst aspect of accessing the internet, trying to determine whether one picture with a mountain in the corner counts as a CAPTCHA request is something we could do without. Thankfully, it appears that Apple will soon take action.
According to TechCrunch, the future iOS 16 update for iPhones will introduce a new function that will quickly avoid those bothersome demands, which often involve entering a code or solving a visual puzzle. Users of iPhones will be able to do this by simply demonstrating they are human. Is it really as futuristic and awesome as that sounds? Though that may sound like a big time saving, not particularly.

In the Settings app, go to Apple ID > Password & Security > Automatic Verification to access the useful new function. When activated, according to Apple, iCloud will silently and automatically authenticate your device and Apple ID account, removing the requirement for apps and websites to ask you to complete a CAPTCHA.

Simply explained, Apple’s system confirms that the device and Apple ID account are in good standing and then delivers what is known as a Private Access Token to the app or website. Apple just provided a video with technical specifics about how the feature works. In comparison to CAPTCHAs, this new method will provide a better user experience for things like logging in or creating an account, while also improving user privacy and accessibility.
Sounds quite useful! It seems to be exclusive to iOS for the time being, but ideally capabilities like this can spread to other platforms in the future. Even if CAPTCHA queries have a logical reason for being filled out, it is unpleasant. It would be nice if there was a way to reduce user frustration without sacrificing CAPTCHAs’ intended purpose.

In the description of a WWDC 2022 video on the subject, Apple stated that “Private Access Tokens are a strong alternative that allow you identify HTTP requests from valid devices and individuals without compromising their identity or personal information.”

Private Access Tokens are already supported by Cloud flare and Fastly, which means that millions of apps and websites utilizing both systems may soon be able to skip CAPTCHAs. Over time, the capability will become more widely available.
Automatic Verification is active by default in the initial beta versions of both iOS 16 and iPadOS 16. According to Apple, macOS Ventura also supports the feature. The beta versions of all the software changes will be issued later this year.
