Since publicly identifying as a part of the LGBTQ+ community, Jason Mraz has been candid about the challenges he has faced on the road to acceptance. The “Have It All” singer, 46, spoke to GLAAD about the ways in which he’s learned to embrace his identity after publicly coming out in 2018 and also shared the ways in which competing on Dancing with the Stars has helped him in his journey.
Before I got here, I had to act out a number of different possible outcomes. It’s hard to accomplish and more complex to undo, and what I’m describing is essentially a divorce, you know?” he asked. And that’s not easy at all. “You have a lot of guilt and shame on your shoulders.
Is Jason Mraz Still Married To Christina Carano?
Mraz married Christina Carano in 2015, and in 2018, he confessed in an interview with Billboard that he’d had se*ual interactions with guys, even while dating Carano. He recalled how Carano had helped him understand that he was “two-spirit,” a Native American phrase for someone capable of loving both men and women, even if he had previously questioned whether he was gay.
Even though he announced his divorce from Carano in June, the Grammy-winning musician stated he “really like[d] that” language. Mraz, who was just added to Out100, Out magazine’s annual selection of the year’s most significant LGBTQ+ people, was quoted as saying to GLAAD that he needed to repair his past while still in the future in order to come to terms with himself.
It’s challenging to “step into this new acceptance and new identity or whatever I’m claiming” while still “healing as many relationships of the past as possible,” he said. To be on the Out100, then, is… I appreciate the recognition.
It was Mraz’s dance-filled music video for “I Feel Like Dancing” that drew the attention of the show’s producers, and he and dance partner Daniella Karagach are presently competing in season 32. The musician has been enjoying the voyage despite his first surprise at how emotional it has been for him.
“All day you’re looking at yourself in the mirror,” he said, “and that can be hard for anybody, any human, to accept themselves looking back at them in the mirror.” “On top of that, my partner is asking me to move in ways that I’ve never moved before, and my reaction is, ‘I look foolish.’ The moment you overcome that barrier is the moment you realize, “OK, I feel kind of cool.” It’s a process that culminates in confidence.

According to Mraz, life is a lot like learning a new dance routine every week; there are just certain days when you wake up feeling “uncomfortable for no reason at all.”
“I’m constantly experiencing this. And I have to work out, like, accepting myself, getting back in my body, moving through life in ways that I’m happy about, and so that by the end of the day I feel accomplished and I feel happy to be me,” he said. “Dance is an amazing medium for that transformation and for that accepting of one’s self.”
Most recently, in June, Mraz released Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride. The death of his stepfather and his mother’s cancer diagnosis, he told PEOPLE at the time, had prompted the recording. “The album title is about life,” he commented at the time. “Life is a rhythmic, radical roller coaster of mystery and magic. So goes the course of life. That’s how I choose to see things because I want to have fun along the way.
