The NFL linebacker Jack Squirek, who helped lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory, passed away on Friday. His age was 64.
On Saturday, the Raiders declared that they were grieving the passing of Jack Squirek. “During his four years with the Raiders, Squirek was instrumental in a legendary play in professional football.”
“The thoughts and deepest condolences of the Raider Nation are with the Squirek family at this time.”
Although his exact cause of death was not disclosed, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that he had been suffering from a sickness for a number of months.
Squirek was selected by the then-Los Angeles Raiders in the 1982 NFL draft, hailing from Illinois, in the second round. Throughout his four years with the club, he appeared in 53 games during the regular season and seven postseason games.
He started eight games and finished with three sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception. The most famous thing that Squirek did in 1984 during Super Bowl XVIII against the Washington Redskins was to make a game-changing interception in the first half.
After reading the script from Washington, the linebacker intercepted Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann and returned the ball five yards for a touchdown. On their way to winning the Super Bowl, the then-Los Angeles Raiders had a commanding 21-3 lead thanks to this play.
Squirek scored his lone touchdown on the interception, which is widely considered a legendary moment in Super Bowl history. “It’s something I’ll never forget. When you win a Super Bowl together, your team is almost like a family,” Squirek told Fox Sports 1340AM in 2021.
“We have reunions every year with the Raiders so we get to see everybody.” “It’s always special not only winning a Super Bowl but knowing that you contributed like that. I feel blessed that I went to a team that had great players.”
During his final season of professional football, he played in two games for the Miami Dolphins in 1986, a loss to San Diego and a victory against the Indianapolis Colts.
Penny, Squirek’s wife, and their children Jacob III and Cassandra are left behind. They were already grandparents to one grandchild and were expecting again.
