Jacob Dutton 1923 Died: Even though it’s a sad day for the Dutton family, it’s an exciting time for people who have been following their long journey. In 1923’s shocking Episode Three, which ended on a cliffhanger, many members of the Dutton family were seriously hurt by gunshots. This brought back memories of the early seasons of Yellowstone. Spoilers for the Yellowstone prequel series with Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford are, of course, coming up. (But maybe not for too much longer!)
When Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn), a Scottish sheepherder, and his gang ambush the Dutton family as they leave Billings, John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) is killed immediately by automatic gunfire. Also hurt were Jacob (Ford), Cara (Mirren), Jack (Darren Mann), and Jack’s fiancee Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph). Banner got even with the Dutton family after they hung him from a tree over a land dispute. This tradition continues in Yellowstone today and usually leads to violent retaliation from their enemies if they survive. It was a surprising move from Sheridan, who seems to be making the Yellowstone main series more violent.

At the end of the episode, Cara writes a letter to Spencer (Brendan Sklenar) and tells him that his uncle is dying. She writes, “Your brother has been killed.” “By the time you get this letter, I expect that your uncle will have also been killed… This ranch is in danger, and so is your legacy. War has come to this place, and your family is in danger. Any war you have with yourself will have to wait. You have to fight this one at home.” Her use of “suppose” leaves much room for Harrison Ford’s character to survive the ambush since it would be a significant risk to kill him off in the third episode. Yet, it’s not like it hasn’t been done in prestige TV before.
No matter what, Spencer needs to stop hunting lions and go back home. Spencer, it’s time for you to shine. He and the woman he just got engaged to two days ago spent the night stuck in a tree while lions tried to eat them. So, I think their scary trips through Africa are over. The new couple promises to leave this life behind for a simpler one. Maybe taking care of cattle on the ranch your family owns? It’s just too bad that things aren’t less dangerous back home. When the next episode of 1923 airs on Sunday, January 8, 2023, we’ll find out. As the Dutton family knows, you always trade one war for another.
