Jake Plummer’s Early Life
Plummer grew up in Smiley Creek, Idaho, a small village of 50 people in the Sawtooth Mountains, where his family owned and operated a lumber mill and warehouse. After attending Pierce Park Elementary School and Hillside Junior High, Plummer finished high school in 1993 at Capital High School. In addition to football, he excelled in baseball and basketball in high school. Punter and quarterback Plummer was a two-sport all-state selection whose junior and senior years saw him throw for 6,097 yards and 68 touchdowns.
Plummer originally wanted to play football at Stanford but was only offered a preferred walk-on offer; instead, he accepted a full ride from California until Huy Jackson, then a coach at ASU, heavily recruited Plummer and eventually convinced him to recommit to the Sun Devils. Plummer was also offered scholarships from Boise State, Idaho, Montana, Oregon State, Washington State, and Wyoming, among others.
Jake Plummer’s Personal Life
Plummer was accused of fondling three women at the Club Rio nightclub in Tempe, Arizona, on March 23, 1997. When confronted by the authorities, the women said that Plummer had reached down and grabbed their crotches while they were dancing and imbibing. He allegedly kicked one of the women in the leg when she objected. Felony sexual abuse charges were filed against Plummer on May 28, 1997, according to court documents. His sentence was eventually reduced as part of a plea agreement, and he was sentenced to two years’ probation and a $1,020 fine, as well as 100 hours of community service.
For much of Plummer’s career, the media focused on his tumultuous off-field image, which included incidents such as his public humiliation of a fan, an altercation in traffic, and a spat with a Denver gossip columnist. There have been a number of controversial statements by Plummer, including his support for medical marijuana and his outrage at Jerry Jones’ dismissal of NFL players with brain damage. Along the way, Plummer established an Alzheimer’s disease charity, volunteered his time to walk dogs at a shelter where he later contributed $10,000, and formed relationships with 9/11-affected youngsters.
He married Kollette Klassen, a former Broncos cheerleader, on August 26, 2007, after they first met in 2005. Kollette became a mother for the first time in June of that year. When Plummer retired from the NFL, he and his wife moved to Sandpoint, Idaho (though they still have a home in Boulder, Colorado).
According to the citations cited above, One of his former agents, Leigh Steinberg, described him as “one of the minuscule few that I could picture leading a perfectly fulfilled life away from athletics.” Concerned about a “scruffy” long-time volunteer’s lack of employment in Sandpoint, Idaho, a Meals on Wheels supervisor asked him to keep track of the kilometers he traveled for the group so he could be reimbursed.

Jake Plummer’s Career
The Arizona Cardinals selected Plummer in the second round of the 1997 NFL draught. His debut season was spent in the shadows of Kent Graham and Stoney Case. To cap off an incredible fourth-quarter comeback, he threw a 31-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds to give the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Three of the Cardinals’ four victories that season came from him. According to teammate Chad Carpenter, who was there while he played at ASU, he was already well-known in the community “as if they were gods.
When he comes by a restaurant where we’re eating, people start standing up and clapping.” Both Pat Tillman, a friend of Plummer’s, and the Cardinals’ 1998 draught pick, were frequent starters for the Cardinals, helping them to a 9–7 regular season record. He passed for 465 yards and three touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys in the tenth game of the season. Before succumbing to the Vikings in the second round, he led the Cardinals to their first postseason win since 1947 against the Dallas Cowboys.
A poor season for Plummer in 1999 saw the Cardinals finish 6–10 with a 3–8 record as a starter and nine touchdowns to 24 interceptions. The Football Outsiders had this to say about Plummer’s season: “It was widely believed that Jake Plummer, the Cardinals’ promising young quarterback, would restore respectability to the team when the season began in 1999. Plummer was the league’s worst quarterback by the end of the 1999 season.” “Gunslinger” was no longer a positive attribute for him. A passer rating of 66.0 was earned by Plummer in 2000 despite his 2,946 passing yards, 21 interceptions, and his 66.0 completion percentage.
The Cardinals went 3-11 under Plummer’s leadership and finished last in the NFC East despite his 10,000-yard passing career total (in 47 starts). His best season with the Cardinals came in 2001 when Plummer had his best statistical year. A quarterback who threw for 3,653 yards, eighteen touchdowns, and fourteen interceptions was one of only two NFL quarterbacks to do so (Kerry Collins was the other). During the season, he attempted 142 passes in a row without inadvertently completing one.
The Cardinals finished the season with a 7–9 record behind Plummer’s 1,227 fourth-quarter passing yards. Again, Plummer’s stats with the Cardinals were down in 2002. (65.7 passer rating, 2,972 yards, eighteen touchdowns, and twenty interceptions). His 15,000th career passing yard mark was reached on September 22 during an NFL game against the San Diego Chargers.
