Jeffrey Carlson’s Cause Of Death
Actor Jeffrey Carlson, 48, who made history with the role of the transgender character Zoe on the ABC daytime drama All My Children, has passed away. Susan Hart, who had previously portrayed Gertrude in Carlson’s Hamlet at the Shakespeare Theatre Company, broke the news of his passing. On July 6, she claimed, Carlson passed away, and ever since then, she’s been “just devastated.”They didn’t say what killed her or him.
Check below Facebook’s post of Susan Hart, who had previously portrayed Gertrude in Carlson’s Hamlet at the Shakespeare Theatre Company, broke the news of his passing:
Carlson was apparently named after All My Children’s Jeff Martin since his mother was a big admirer of the program when he was a baby. He was born in California in 1975. Beginning in 2006, he appeared in over 50 episodes of the soap drama.
Carlson initially debuted on the program as a British musician called Zarf but was invited back months later when the writers wanted to reintroduce the character as a transgender woman. The whole process of Zoe’s gender change was depicted, from her visits to the endocrinology to her involvement with a transgender support group to her disclosure of her identity to her parents.
While transgender characters have previously been given supporting parts on US television, Zoe was the first such character to appear regularly in a daytime drama. While soap audiences had grown accustomed to gay characters, “tackling the first transgender coming-out on network television could be risky for a soap opera at a time when daytime dramas are suffering serious audience erosion,” as reported by the Los Angeles Times in 2006.

Carlson told People magazine a year later that Zoe was created to “cause a conversation.” “Members of the transgender community are talking with the regular posters on the All My Children chatrooms,” he added. “I got a letter from an 11-year-old girl. It said, ‘It’s cool you’re going to become a girl. Then we will have stuff in common.’”
From its debut in 1970 until its cancellation in 2011, ABC’s All My Children aired more than 10,000 episodes. Billy in The Goat or Who Is Sylvia? by Edward Albee and Marilyn in Taboo are only two of Carlson’s Broadway roles. He also made cameos in movies including Will Smith’s comedy Hitch from 2005.
Hold up New York theater critic Adam Feldman called Carlson on Twitter an “exposed-nerve star of Broadway (Billy in The Goat, Marilyn in Taboo), and TV (the breakthrough trans role Zoe on All My Children). A powerful actor and a painful loss … it was clear he was something special.”
Carlson’s All My Children co-star Eden Riegel wrote: “Devastated beyond measure to hear of the passing of the beautiful and gifted Jeffrey Carlson. I feel fortunate to have called this kind soul a friend and see his brilliant work up close. Gone far too soon – an unimaginable loss. Love you, Jeffrey. Rest friend.”

His “memorable performances” in Lorenzaccio (2005), Hamlet (2007), Free for All (2008), and Romeo and Juliet (2016) were recalled by the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC. A line from Hamlet was included in the tribute: “Good night, sweet prince, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
