Jenniffer Mulhern Granholm (born February 5, 1959) is a Canadian-American politician and lawyer who has been serving as the 16th Secretary of Energy of the United States since January 1, 2019. She was the state’s first female attorney general and the state’s 47th governor, both positions held while she was a Democrat. She was elected to both positions in 1999.
She was four years old when her family relocated to California from Vancouver, British Columbia. At Harvard Law School, she served as editor-in-chief of the Harvard Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Law Review, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984 and a Juris Doctor in 1986. As a result, she worked as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Damon Keith of the Sixth Circuit, was appointed assistant U.S. attorney in 1991, and was appointed to Wayne County Corporation Counsel in 1995.

His parents were also bank tellers: Shirley Alfreda (née Dowden) and Victor Ivar (also known as Victor Ivar) Granholm. Grandma Granholm was born in Newfoundland and grew up in Ireland. Hugo “Anders” Granholm, her grandpa, came to Penny, British Columbia, Canada in the late 1920s from Robertsfors, Sweden, where his father served as mayor. For the 1988 presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis, she was a volunteer. Prior to becoming an assistant US attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan in 1991, Granholm served as an attorney in the office of the Wayne County Executive for three years (1989–91).

When Smietanka launched television advertising calling Granholm an “inexperienced” and “dangerous” liberal in mid-September, the election became increasingly tense. Granholm’s crime plan, which advocated for more rehabilitation for non-violent criminals and shorter jail terms, was linked by him to Geoffrey Fieger’s crime plan, a Democratic gubernatorial nominee.
In a statement, Granholm claimed the assertion was “a lie, just a lie” and that she was the attorney general responsible for protecting consumers from misleading advertising. After being asked what set her apart from Smietanka, Granholm simply stated that she was more honest than her. Smietanka’s advertising was branded “trash” and “con” by Kelley, who appeared in an ad accusing the candidate of pursuing a “dishonest” campaign in support of Granholm.
He was upset by Democratic ads that mentioned Smietanka’s late child support payments and implied that he had misled the party about the amount of his own money he had donated. Smietanka was defeated by Granholm by 1,557,310 votes (52.09 percent) to 1,432,604 votes in a close contest, with surveys showing the two contenders with nearly identical votes (47.91 percent ). Smietanka and then-Republican Governor John Engler clashed after Granholm was elected governor in 2002, debating who was more responsible for Granholm’s dramatic ascent to power in Michigan.
Following Smietanka defeated G. Scott Romney in the 1998 Republican primary, Engler tried to disqualify him by bringing up his missed child support payments. He also accused Engler of failing to show his support after Smietanka’s victory. Romney, she responded, would have defeated the inexperienced Granholm, and Smietanka would have been left with no platform for her 2002 gubernatorial campaign.
