Pittsburgh-based stand-up comedian John Pinette, known for his self-deprecating humor and his love of food, was found dead in a hotel on Saturday at the age of 50.
Pinette was a beloved figure in the Pittsburgh comedy scene, and his death is a loss to the community. He was a talented performer who made audiences laugh with his unique brand of humour. He will be deeply missed.
John Pinette Cause Of Death
The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office confirmed on Monday that the body of comedian John Pinette was discovered in a hotel room in Pittsburgh on Saturday. Pinette, 50, passed away of natural causes related to “a medical history he was being treated for,” according to a representative for the medical examiner.
Pinette’s personal doctor cited a pulmonary embolism as the cause of death, though an autopsy was not performed. He had suffered from liver and heart disease in the past.
Since his private physician signed off on the death certificate, there will be no need for an autopsy. Pinette performed stand-up for over twenty years, but his part in the “Seinfeld” series finale in 1998 is perhaps what made him famous. In the previous episode, his character Howie was a carjacking victim.
Pinette’s longtime manager Larry Schapiro stated on Monday that the musician was “clean and sober” at the time of his death, despite the “physical toll” his addictions had taken on him in the past.

In the previous two years, Pinette has gone from a weight of 450 pounds to 250 pounds. Schapiro revealed that the comic set he was working on was named “They Call Me Slim” and was inspired by his remarkable weight loss.
His manager shared his opening line: “You know how they say in every fat person there’s a skinny person waiting to come out? Well, mine came out, and mine was fat.”
“Earlier this year, Pinette announced to his Twitter followers that he would be taking a hiatus from his profession because he was “physically spent” after dropping a lot of weight and undergoing several minor procedures. Unfortunately, “I didn’t give myself enough time to heal this past fall and it has caught up with me,” he admitted. However, I am recovering well and will return to the stage as soon as feasible.”

Career
Pinette, a native of Boston, abandoned a successful accounting profession in the 1980s to focus on stand-up. Self-deprecating remarks about his weight became a trademark of his comic acts as he went on to tour with Frank Sinatra and became a regular guest on The Tonight Show and The View.
Junior, Dear God, Duets, The Punisher (with Thomas Jane and John Travolta), and The Last Godfather (2010) are just a few of the films in which he has appeared. His role as Howie, the overweight victim of a carjacking on the Seinfeld series finale in 1998, is one of his most recognizable roles.
Pinette was nominated for a Gemini Award in 2000 for his broadcast set at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, which had previously earned him the title of Stand-Up Comedian of the Year from the American Comedy Awards in 1999.
After playing Edna Turnblad in the touring production of Hairspray beginning in 2004, Pinette took over the role in the Broadway production beginning in 2005 and remained in it until May 28, 2006.
In 2004, Pinette had some of his stand-up routines adapted into an animated series for Comedy Central called Shorties Watchin’ Shorties. John Pinette: Still Hungry was filmed during his 2010 stand-up tour and premiered on Comedy Central.

Pinette had a live comedy tour planned for April–June around the United States and Canada, and his next performance was set to take place at a California comedy club named Ontario Improv. He had to cancel a number of shows in 2013 due to his prescription medication addiction treatment, and he had to postpone a tour earlier this year so that he could have surgery to help him lose weight.
“I didn’t give myself enough time to heal this past fall and it has caught up with me,” Pinette said. “But I’m on the mend and I promise to hit the stage as soon as humanly possible.”
