Christina Ricci has spoken candidly about a memory from her youth in which Johnny Depp described to her “what homosexuality was.” The 1990 romantic drama Mermaids featured the Yellowjackets actor with Depp’s then-girlfriend Winona Ryder when she was nine years old. “Something was going on the set, and someone wasn’t treating someone nicely. On Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show recently, Ricci said, “And they were like, ‘Oh, yeah, he might be homophobic.'”
She said, “And then I was like, “Well, I don’t understand what that means.” She said, “I don’t know how [to explain], because I was in Winona’s trailer at the time. She recalled, “so she put me on the phone with Johnny, and Johnny explained it to me. Ricci said Depp gave his answer in a “very matter-of-fact” manner. “It happens when a man wants to have sex with another male and when a woman wants to have sex with another woman,” he said. And I responded, “Ah, okay, “” she recalled.

The Emmy-nominated actor then co-starred with Depp in a number of movies, including the comedies Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Sleepy Hollow (1999), and The Man Who Cried (2000). Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard recently took part in a public court proceeding. In an opinion piece that appeared in The Washington Post, she identified herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse,” and he alleged she had defamed him there. In a countersuit filed in November 2020, Heard requested immunity from Depp’s allegations.
A jury concluded on June 1 that Depp had been falsely accused by his ex-wife Amber Heard of doing so in three statements. In addition, the jury determined that one of the three statements highlighted in Heard’s countersuit, made by a Depp lawyer, was defamatory. Depp received $10.35 million in damages, while Heard received $2 million. Depp’s ex-girlfriend Ellen Barkin testified during the case’s pretrial document release that Depp gave her a narcotic before their initial sexual encounter.
