Jordan Levy, a native of Vernon Hill whose blunt demeanor helped him succeed as mayor and as a talk show presenter, has passed away. He was 79. There are a lot of people he helped. Jim Polito, the presenter of WTAG radio, broke the news of his colleague’s passing on Friday morning. “He loved the city of Worcester,” he added.

Levy passed after a brief illness on Thursday night at the Jewish Healthcare Center in Worcester. Sherri Beth Carpineto, a daughter, referred to her father as “a champion for Worcester” and “a supporter of the people of Worcester” and noted that he contributed both time and money to numerous neighborhood charities.
“As much as he relished being a politician, a radio talk show host even more, my dad shined the most behind the spotlight and not in front of it,” Carpineto said. “As a father, a grandfather, a husband and certainly as a humanitarian, he gave a huge amount of his time and money that people didn’t know and really volunteered to make the city and the community better.”

Jordan Levy, the son of Benjamin and Rachel (Sher) Levy, attended Worcester Junior College and then went on to pursue a lucrative career in business. He spent many years at Parker Affiliated Cos., where he eventually rose to the position of president and CEO.

Levy served as mayor of Worcester for four terms, beginning with one in the early 1980s and three more beginning in 1988. He was a member of the Governor’s Council as well as the board of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. He entered the city’s political scene in the middle of the 1970s, and in 1975, he was elected to the City Council, where he served until 1993.

As a Democrat, he was. Even if his beliefs weren’t controversial, he spoke with passion and ferocity. He expressed resistance to the DCU Center, the proposed civic center. His humorous approach to expressing disgust was one of his radio show’s more well-liked parts. He would say, “Time to throw them under the bus.”
The crinkle of the unfolding newspaper would be broadcast over the airwaves as he read aloud from an article. He frequently made references to the morning newspaper. It was the first time the city’s leader was chosen by the people when he was elected mayor in November 1987. Before the charter was altered, Worcester’s city councilors elected the mayor.
