The year 1971 saw the birth of Haart in Moscow. The family uprooted from Russia and settled in Austin, Texas when she was three years old. In Austin, where she lived, she went to a private school where she was the only Jewish student. After Haart’s parents had a religious epiphany in fourth grade, they decided to relocate to Monsey, New York, home to a sizable Haredi community that piqued their interest. Located in Brooklyn, New York, Bais Yaakov Academy was Haart’s educational institution of choice.

The designer hasn’t been shy about sharing her struggles. ‘Honestly, had it not been for my kids, I think the way I would have quit my community would have been to murder myself,’ she told Elle magazine. It was the year before I left. Haart said, “I recorded in my diary nearly every day, How can I injure my children the least? So I made up my mind that if I starved to death, no one would ever find out. To me, the stigma of being labeled as suicidal is not as severe as that of being labeled as having an eating issue.
