After being discovered, McKay was in San Bernardino County. When deputies tried to contact him, he retreated, starting a pursuit. The suspect’s car crashed and became disabled along the 15 Freeway in Norco, putting a violent stop to the quest that spanned San Bernardino to Riverside counties.
After the pursuit, McKay allegedly fired several shots at deputies, according to Sheriff Bianco. Deputies opened fire in response, hitting McKay. The suspect was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital, where he passed away from his wounds.

In addition to working at the Larry Smith Correctional Center and the Indio Jail, Cordero began working for the sheriff’s office in May 2014 as a correctional officer for the Robert Presley Detention Center.
