The first tattoo Justin Bieber ever received was on his torso, and he quickly covered it up. At 16, he received his first tattoo, a seagull on his hip. Based on the book by Richard Bach, “Johnathan Livingston Seagull” (via Capital FM). Above his belly button is the album’s title, “Purpose,” from his 2015 release. On the left side of his collar bone, he has his mother’s birth year (1975) tattooed. In 2012, Bieber had a tiny crown tattooed on his chest. Some listeners interpret it as a nod to Michael Jackson.

The singer sports a massive eagle tattoo on his lower belly. He covered his body with Christian symbols to indicate how seriously he took his faith. Tattoos include the phrase “Son of God,” two angels on either side of his torso, a big cathedral, and skeletons that signify a conflict between good and evil can be found mostly on his chest and stomach.

The famous tattoo artist Bang Bang was hired by Bieber to ink an angel battle scene, complete with a huge cathedral, skeletons, and other imagery, across his stomach. One angel was placed on each side, and we added two altogether. According to artist Bang Bang, whose work was featured on E! News, “they’re overwhelming the evil” below each one. When I write something huge, it always has to have both good and bad elements.

A middle ground must be found… In other words, there must be some kind of visual contrast. Every one of those angels has a demon beneath it. “The skeleton on one side and the serpent on the other.” Continued the artist, “It’s emblematic of Gothic art and the conflict between the light and dark, the good and the bad, yin and yang. I thought it would be interesting to have some visual and thematic contrast. Among his many tattoos, the one that best explained his faith stood out to me. His guardians include both the animals he encounters in his daily life and the angels he prays to. I was aiming for intense depth and coherence.

In 2012, when Gomez showed off her new tattoo, many people assumed it was a little black heart. However, at a bash before the Oscars, the then-19-year-old actress put the record straight regarding her first tattoo. According to Gomez’s explanation to Access Hollywood, the symbol is a musical note. “For some reason, everyone assumed it was a heart, although music has always played a significant role in shaping my personality.” She elaborated, saying of the late Latina singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez, “I was named after a singer, I’m a singer and a lot of other personal reasons.”

Gomez commissioned the legendary New Yorker tattooist Keith Scott “Bang Bang” McCurdy to ink “LXXVI” on her body in 2012. She wanted to honor a family member who meant a lot to her by getting this tattoo, her boyfriend Bang Bang explained to the Daily Mail. Gomez published a photo of the tattoo with the phrase “1976” over a year later. Assumably, this is a nod to Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, who was just 16 years old when she gave birth to her.

Gomez’s third tattoo, on her thigh, was hidden from the public eye for over a year after she received it in 2012. I’ve done a fairly good job of disguising it,” she told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show in 2013. After admirers saw the tattoo in a snapshot of her at the beach, Gomez told Ryan Seacrest that “God who strengthens me” is a paraphrase of Philippians 4:13.

No one knows when Gomez got this delicate initial tattooed on her, but in an interview with Refinery29 in 2015, she revealed that the “G” is for her half-sister Gracie, who was born in 2013.
