British-Swiss journalist, author, and broadcaster Katherine “Katty” Kay was born on November 14, 1964. She hosted BBC Four, BBC News, and BBC World News’ Beyond 100 Days alongside Christian Fraser. Kay was raised in Blewbury after she moved there as a child in 1964 after being born in Wallingford (then in Berkshire, now in Oxfordshire). As her father served as a British diplomat in a number of Middle Eastern nations, she traveled extensively throughout the region. She graduated from St. Hilda’s College in Oxford with a degree in modern languages and is proficient in both French and Italian. Kay got a brief stint with the Bank of England when she graduated. She tried her hand at economics but ultimately decided to join a charity in Zimbabwe instead. Later, her buddy Matt Frei showed up at her house with a tape recorder and convinced her to start a career in journalism. In 1990, Kay began working for the BBC as a correspondent covering Zimbabwe for BBC World Service’s African service.
She started her career in radio with BBC World Service in London, later moving to Tokyo for BBC News on TV in 1992, and finally landing in Washington, D.C. in 1996. She then went on to work in the newsroom at The Times, but in 2002 she relocated to the United States to freelance for the BBC.
In June of 2004, Kay began co-presenting the BBC World news bulletins with Mike Embley in London.
