On Friday, your four-legged pals can receive free vaccinations at the Lake County Animal Shelter. For individuals who pre-register, the shelter will provide parvovirus vaccination services for residents’ pets at its 12280 County Road 448 facility in Tavares from 10 a.m. to noon.

Canine parvovirus, which spreads by direct contact with diseased dogs, contaminated excrement, or the environment, is reportedly highly contagious, potentially fatal, but treatable through vaccination, according to shelter officials.

In May, numerous dogs in the neighbourhood tested positive for the virus, the shelter’s authorities stated. Officials at the shelter said a drive-thru vaccination service has been put up because of the exceptionally high number of cases.

The drive-thru ensures that dogs stay in cars and are less likely to spread the virus or get infected because they may live for a long time on contaminated surfaces like cages, water bowls, and fabrics if they are not adequately sterilized.

Dog owners should be aware of the signs of parvovirus, which is considerably more prevalent in the summer. These symptoms include vomiting, severe diarrhoea, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and bloating.

According to shelter officials, the majority of parvovirus-related deaths take place within the first 48 to 72 hours of symptoms, and prolonged vomiting and diarrhoea can cause rapid dehydration. You should call your veterinarian right once if your dog exhibits parvovirus symptoms.

The Lake County Animal Shelter is in need of extra supplies, including towels and washcloths, as it is now giving intensive treatment to numerous dogs who are infected with parvovirus.
