The citizens of Lake County anticipated a few glitches in the household waste collection process after the county contracted with a new waste company the previous year. Even though we are well into the new year, there are still residents who are waiting for their recyclables and yard debris to be collected. Jody Mullens, a resident of Lake County, stated that the problems are causing frustration within the community.

“No one is going to show up. It just seemed like we didn’t care about our neighborhood or the fact that things were building up, and it looked terrible as a result. Do you know what I mean? Just looked dreadful, ” Mullens remarked. Since October, when the county first started working with FCC Environmental on a contractual basis, county residents have been complaining about the unreliable service, but the corporation has been slow to respond to their concerns.

“There was no movement being made. “They would react to the email by saying, “Okay, we know that this was missed,” but nobody ever came to pick up anything,” Mullens claimed. The inhabitants of Lake County received an acknowledgment letter from county commissioners in the month of November. According to what was written in the letter, “the board of county commissioners (board) realizes that the delayed or missed home garbage collection has created a stressful situation for a number of households.”

Along with the letter, the county mailed a check for residents in the amount of $16.83 as a refund. The county also urged residents to the patient until fcc becomes accustomed to the new routes. Officials from the county have stated that they normally give haulers a year to work on logistics and staffing before establishing a new route, but in the case of FCC, the company only had ninety days to get ready. The county said that FCC had added three extra vehicles to assist with the collection, and the county also stated that it had recruited a solid waste consultant to assess the existing collection system.
