Many people think of Law & Order when they hear the word “long-running crime drama,” but there aren’t many shows that can keep viewers engrossed and interested even after all these seasons.
In addition to the main series, the Law & Order universe has seen several spin-offs, the most notable of which is the highly successful Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
The Special Victims Unit of the New York Police Department investigates sexually based crimes, such as sexual assault and harassment, and the cases they take on are the focus of the show.
With the release of the 25th season of Law & Order: SVU this month and a new season of the SVU spin-off Organized Crime following suit, the show’s steady stream of episodes hasn’t slowed down much since its 1999 debut.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 25 Release Date
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will return to NBC on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET for its 25th season premiere. There is still no word on when Organized Crime will be released in the UK.
It is unclear which streaming platform fans in the UK may anticipate to watch SVU on when it finally arrives, as the series has previously broadcast on Sky Witness and NOW but re-runs can be seen on 5USA. As soon as we have additional information, we will share it with you.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit season 25 Cast
While much of the main cast has stayed the same throughout SVU’s 25 seasons, things got wild when Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler left in 2011 to star in his own spin-off, Organized Crime.
Joining Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson, regulars like Ice-T as Fin and Peter Scanavino as Sonny will most certainly be back for more SVU. Kelli Giddish will be returning for the season 25 premiere, so at least one familiar figure from SVU’s past will be making a triumphant return.
From her debut in season 13 all the way through her departure in December 2022, Giddish played the role of Amanda Rollins, a former detective.
Giddish has since made a triumphant return for the SVU season 24 finale, where viewers discovered that she has taken a job teaching criminal behavior at Fordham University—a life that has become noticeably less thrilling.
Can we expect Rollins to return to the SVU squad? The exact nature of Giddish’s return is unknown at this time; however, her return could be part of a larger plot that sees her return to the series on a more frequent basis.
We anticipate the following members of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit cast to return for season 25:
- Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson
- Ice-T as Odafin “Fin” Tutuola
- Peter Scanavino as Dominick “Sonny” Carisi Jr
- Demore Barnes as Christian Barland
- Octavio Pisano as Joe Velasco
We know that Molly Burnett, who played Detective Grace Muncy for less than a year, will not be back for season 25.
Since Deadline broke the news of Burnett’s leaving in May 2023, there is a vacancy on the SVU cast and it is possible that Giddish or another character will be joining the show to fill the void.
What Will Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 25 Be About?
Season 6 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors by tackling some of the city’s most horrific sexually-based crimes, while specific information about the show are still under wraps.
Olivia and Elliot reunited in the climactic Organized Crime crossover episode from the last time we saw SVU. The criminal behind a sinister website that promised “rape and murder for hire” was brought down in the confrontation.
In the series finale, Burnett’s Detective Muncy departs SVU for a position offered to her by McGrath (Terry Serpico) on a task force after the teams finally shut down the site and nail the offender.
When Rollins makes her triumphant return to the squad in the season 25 opener, viewers will likely find out more about her life after SVU. They will also wonder how she wound up back in their midst—could she be bringing a criminal case to their attention? For now, we can only speculate.
