League Of Their Own Season 2 Storyline
Dottie Hinson visits the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988 for the unveiling of an exhibit dedicated to the aforementioned All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Seeing so many of her old teammates and friends brings back memories from 1943. Walter Harvey, the owner of the Chicago Cubs, convinces his fellow MLB owners to fund a women’s league as the war threatens to end baseball as they know it.
It has been decided to put Ira Lowenstein in charge. At an Oregon industrial-league softball game, scout Ernie Capadino spots a player he likes in Dottie, the catcher for a local dairy. For the time being, she is content with her existence as she awaits Bob’s return from the war. Kit, on the other hand, is itching to leave home and establish a name for herself. Kit’s batting doesn’t impress Capadino, and he won’t even evaluate her throwing, but if she can convince Dottie, they’ll go. Dottie gives in for the sake of her sister.
For the tryout, Dottie and Kit go to Chicago’s Harvey Field. A taxi dancer named Mae “All the Way Mae” Mordabito and her best friend, bouncer Doris Murphy, are introduced, as are right fielder Evelyn Gardner, left fielder Shirley Baker, pitcher/shortstop and former Miss Georgia beauty queen Ellen Sue Gotlander, left fielder/relief pitcher Betty “Spaghetti” Horn, second baseperson Marla Hooch, first baseperson Helen Haley, and superstitious Alice “Skeeter” Gaspers. They, along with four others, will make up the Rockford Peaches, while the Racine Belles, Kenosha Comets, and South Bend Blue Sox will each have a total of 48 players.
Jimmy Dugan, a cynical alcoholic and former star slugger for the Cubs, now manages the Peaches. He takes the situation lightly and is rude to his team. Evelyn’s pampered brat of a son, Stillwell, and the overly anxious team chaperone, Miss Cuthburt, accompany the team on their trip. Because the league has received so little attention, Lowenstein pleads with the players to do something extraordinary for the Life magazine photographer in the stands. Dottie plays along by catching a popped-up ball while performing a split behind home plate. As a result, the shot is used on the cover of the publication. The proprietors aren’t convinced by the increased attendance after a publicity campaign.
There’s a strong sense of camaraderie among the players. On the other hand, Mae teaches Shirley to read, Evelyn composes a team song, and Marla leaves the team to marry a man named Nelson she met on a rowdy roadhouse adventure. Kit becomes angry as her sister Dottie is made the face of the league, leading to an increase in a sibling rivalry that ultimately leads to Kit being traded to the Racine Belles.
The season concludes with the Peaches having the best record in the league and therefore securing a spot in the World Series. Jimmy sends Betty a telegram to tell her that her husband was killed in battle in the Pacific Theater. She abandons the group in her state of grief. Later that day, Dottie is taken aback when Bob unexpectedly returns home from the military after being injured and medically released. Jimmy finds out that Dottie and Bob are leaving together. He tried to convince her to play in the World Series, but she was having none of it.
This World Series between the Peaches and the Belles will go the full seven games. For game seven, Dottie is back with the Peaches, while Kit takes the mound for the Belles. With one out and one run in the top of the ninth, Dottie drives in the winning run for the Belles. The kit is heartbroken, but fate grants her a second chance when she comes to bat with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
She gets a hit and the winning run is scored when she knocks down her sister Dottie at the plate, causing her to drop the ball. Over the years, viewers and actors alike have disagreed over whether or not Dottie intentionally missed the target. The buying public influences Harvey to side with Lowenstein and the club’s owners.
When the game is over, the sisters talk things over and makeup before Dottie and Bob leave. Dottie meets up with Kit and Capadino and Lowenstein in the current day, but an elderly Stillwell breaks the news to her that Evelyn has passed away. The deaths of Bob and Dugan are also confirmed. Evelyn’s team song is sung and a group photo is taken of the remaining Peaches. After the credits roll, a game of baseball is shown taking place at Doubleday Field.
