Would you think that in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which was released 20 years ago, Lizzie McGuire took us to Rome, encountered her singing doppelgänger, and gave us the timeless Disney song “What Dreams Are Made Of”? Fans have asked Hilary Duff to return as the awkward fashionista navigating love, friendship, and family for the past 20 years. When Disney+ revealed that a Lizzie McGuire revival would be coming in 2019, it appeared as if it would finally happen.
Unfortunately, the project was abandoned in 2020 due to reported disagreements between the artists and streaming platform executives. But like her devoted audience, Duff hopes the revival will eventually happen. She even expresses “optimism” that it will. Duff was questioned about the revival on January 26 during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

Would you move through with the resurrection of the Lizzie McGuire remake could fulfill your vision? Host Cohen posed in response to a fan inquiry. Duff answered without hesitating, “Of course.” When Cohen questioned what the “major sticking point” was, the “So Yesterday” singer paused a little longer before responding, “Disney+ was very new, and I think they were working out there… as we were determining our… I am “optimistic,” too. Duff is alluding to the January 2020 production halt announcement made by Disney+, which came just two months after they began shooting.
In response to claims that the show was too “adult,” Terri Minsky, the creator of the original series, was also let go by Disney+. A month later, Duff declared that she wanted the revival to air on Hulu to get around the PG rating. “I feel a great obligation to respect LIZZIE’s fans, who grew up seeing themselves in her like me. I’d be doing everyone a disservice by keeping the realities of a 30-year-journey olds within the confines of a PG classification.
If Disney were interested, she continued, “It would be a dream if we could relocate the program to Hulu, and I could bring this beloved character back to life.” The Disney alum officially canceled the revival in December 2020 via Instagram. She wrote, “Unfortunately & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen.” She added, “I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and real to who Lizzie would be now. I also referenced the streaming service’s problem with Lizzie growing up. Because that’s what the character merits.

Following the cancellation, Duff shared her vision of Lizzie in the modern world with her followers. Duff stated, “I think she would be eccentric, I think that she would struggle with confidence, but I believe at the end of the day, she finds her footing,” in a March 2021 interview with Good Morning America. “She doesn’t have all the answers right away, but she’s on the right path,” she continued, “which is what’s so charming about her, and that’s what’s so sympathetic.”
The Younger actress eventually provided more information regarding the cancellation and how Disney+ perhaps “got spooked” a year later. In a May 2022 interview with Women’s Health, she claimed that “Lizzie had to be 30 years old doing 30-year-old things.” She didn’t have to rip bongs regularly and have one-night stands, but it had to be genuine. I believe they were alarmed. The plot of the relaunch would have been to follow Lizzie after she returns home to live with her family after learning that her fiancé had cheated.
