Lizzo Performs Live With James Madison’s Crystal Flute

During her Tuesday night performance in the nation’s capital, Lizzo used a crystal flute that belonged to James Madison. The Library of Congress offered Lizzo the chance to “play a few” flutes from its large collection in the days preceding up to the concert. Lizzo, a classically trained flutist, couldn’t refuse the offer, and so history was created on stage on Tuesday.

The speaker exclaimed, “This is really insane. Lizzo said, “I have to be incredibly careful” as she started to introduce the evening’s very important guest. In honor of James Madison’s second presidential term, a French crystal flute manufacturer presented him with this piece around the turn of the nineteenth century. A fire broke out… A painting of George Washington and this crystal flute were the only items that survived.

Continuing, Lizzo said, “I am the first person to ever play it, so you are about to hear what it sounds like for the first time.” Next, a staff member from the Library of Congress presented Lizzo with the instrument. She stared at it in awe for a while, then played a few notes and twerked a little before returning it to the representative.

She proclaimed, “Bitch, I just twerked and played James Madison’s 1800s flute!” We appreciate the Library of Congress’s efforts to keep our past accessible and relevant. It’s time you guys realized that history is totally awesome.
