After a fight outside Jefferson Mall on Monday night, a friend shot a person who was in critical condition, according to the Louisville Metro Police.
At 5:14 p.m., Beth Ruoff, a department spokesperson, confirmed in an email that a shooting had been reported to the police. She said that the scene was safe at the time and that LMPD would give out more information. Ruoff asked people to stay away from the area while an investigation is going on.
Monday at 4:44 p.m., a MetroSafe supervisor was told about the shooting. The manager said that one person was taken from the scene.
Lt. Col. Steve Healey of the Louisville Metro Police Department said that the person who was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital is in very bad shape.
Healey said that a fight broke out in the mall and moved outside, where shots were fired. At 7 p.m., the suspect was still on the run.
Healey said that the people involved all knew each other. He said, “This wasn’t just one person going into the mall and shooting up everything.”

Loren Yates wasn’t in the mall when the shooting happened, but she went out Monday night after hearing that a friend was there when shots were fired. Yates said that her friend was fine, but the event had shaken her up.
“It’s not so good. “It breaks my heart a little,” she said. “But I can’t do anything about it… It makes sense. This is close to where I live, and there is a lot to see.”
At 7 p.m., the Jefferson Mall was still on lockdown, even though a SWAT team had cleared the mall. Healey said that when the shooting happened, the security gates were opened to keep people safe. Healey said that homicide detectives are talking to witnesses and then getting rid of some of them.
“We’re at a mall during the holidays, and some people want to decide to pick up a gun and fire it at a mall during the holidays, “Healey said. “You can’t think rationally about something like that.”
A representative for the mall, Stacey Keating, said that it will be open on Tuesday during normal business hours.
The address of Jefferson Mall is 4801 Outer Loop. It is in the Okolona neighborhood of Louisville.
