Mac Miller, whose real name was Malcolm James McCormick, was an American rapper and record producer who died on September 7, 2018. At the tender age of fifteen, Miller made his debut on the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene in 2007. A breakthrough came with the publication of his mixtapes K.I.D.S. (2010) and Best Day Ever (2010), leading to a record deal with the independent label Rostrum Records (2011). Miller’s Blue Slide Park (2011) was the first debut studio album to top the US Billboard 200 via independent distribution since 1995.
Under his aegis in 2013, the record label sublabel REMember Music was established. He parted ways with Rostrum after his second studio album, 2013’s Watching Movies with the Sound Off, and signed with Warner Bros. The year 2014 set several records. During his time with the label, he put out four studio albums: GO: OD AM (2015), The Divine Feminine (2016), Swimming (2018), and Circles (issued after his death) (2020). Swimming earned him a posthumous nomination for Best Rap Album at the Grammys. Under the alias Larry Fisherman, he also worked as a record producer for several artists, including himself.
Mac Miller Fans Pay Tribute on Fourth Anniversary of Rapper’s Death
On the fourth anniversary of Mac Miller’s death, his fans and loved ones have flocked to social media to pay respect to the late rapper and producer. On September 7, 2018, at age 26, Mac died after an accidental overdose. L.A. County coroner’s investigators released the results of Miller’s autopsy shortly after his death in 2018. The County Coroner’s Office determined that his system’s fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol caused his death.
Two of the three drug dealers accused of providing Miller with fake oxycodone laced with fentanyl serve at least 11 years in jail for their roles in Miller’s death. Mac Miller, born in Pittsburgh, became famous during the heyday of “frat rap” in the 2010s. His first mixtape, K.I.D.S., was well received, and he joined Kendrick Lamar and Meek Mill in the XXL Freshman Class of 2011.
After that, Miller made five more albums equally well received by fans and critics. On January 17, 2020, his sixth studio album, titled Circles, was released after his death. The news of Mac Miller’s death sent shockwaves through the rap scene, and on Wednesday, his friends and fans took a minute to honor his memory. One mourner tweeted, “Mac Miller’s death changed my outlook on many things.” That day will remain etched in my mind for the rest of my life. The actual event day was a total blur, but I have vivid memories of it every year since. Even down to the exact minute I received the news.
Another Twitter user chimed in with, “Can’t believe it’s already been four years since we lost mac miller.” It’s important to express your gratitude to the people in your life. Never stop sharing the love; life is too short to be anything but. In the words of a third, “u can see the child they once were when they smile hard or genuinely laugh.” I wish more grownups today still smiled and laughed as Mac Miller did. The beloved Mac has passed away. Keep laughing and smiling like a kid; I know you’re out there.
Mac Miller dying shifted my perspective in so many areas of my life. fr. That day will forever be ingrained in my head. The day it happened felt like such a blur, but now every year I remember it so vividly. All the way down to what time it was when I found out the news.

A close friend and frequent collaborator of Mac Miller’s, Thundercat, also paid tribute on Instagram by sharing some clips from their viral NPR Tiny Desk Concert. “While your friends are still living, give them flowers,” Thundercat penned.
On Tuesday (September 6), French Montana revealed he was starting an addiction assistance service in memory of Mac Miller. Montana, who has struggled with substance abuse, discussed his new relationship with Guardian Recovery Services and NAQI Healthcare on the PEOPLE Everyday podcast. The goal of the cooperation is to provide supervised in-home detox programs for addicts.
French: “Being in that space and thinking of these artists as my brothers and my family, [Mac Miller’s death] hit me hard.” To lose one is to lose a damned near substantial portion of ourselves, he said. After noting that attempting to detox on one’s own can often lead to dangerous situations, he explained how his program assists addicts safely and effectively.
He warned that you couldn’t just get rid of it because it’s harmful. When I think about how we can help people get better, especially at home, it fills me with joy and excitement. The majority of people prefer to keep to themselves.
