San Diego Padres outfielder Manny Machado had surgery on Tuesday, October 3, to repair the extensor tendon in his right elbow. The more important issue is when, if at all, Manny Machado will be ready to play baseball.
Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press reported that Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the operation. The timetable for Manny Machado’s recuperation is believed to be between four and six months.

Machado originally resisted having surgery. Due in part to this, ESPN announced on September 29 that the Padres had been eliminated from playoff contention.
Machado Purposely Found A Method To Aid The Padres
“We were trying to avoid it as much as we can,” Machado said about the surgery at the time. “But unfortunately, [the injury] has just put us in that situation, and you know what, it’s probably going to make me better, going to make us all better. Just get it done, get ready for next year, come back, and be healthy.”
Machado enjoys a successful season regardless of his health. The 31-year-old hit five home runs in as many attempts during the entire month. A return to action for the six-time All-Star is possible as soon as spring camp. Manny Machado may be ready for the Padres’ opening day roster if the team decides to give him the full rehab.

Machado Mega-Deal
Ironically, this is also the first year of his new contract with the Padres. The Associated Press reported that the 2020 Silver Slugger Award winner and the Padres have agreed to an 11-year, $350 million contract, avoiding the free agent market in the process and giving the team a better chance of realizing its goal of reaching the World Series for the first time.
“We entered 2023 with expectations that we would build on last year’s NLCS appearance and contend for a World Series Championship. We fell short of that goal. The Padres organization will learn from this season and emerge in 2024 with the pieces in place to compete for San Diego’s first World Series title,” Seidler wrote.
“Our current leadership team continues to have my full support, and I have asked them to perform a thorough assessment of our organization, beginning today. We will make the changes necessary to play championship-caliber baseball for our extraordinary fans in 2024.”
