A reform that would compel high school females who participate in sports to inform school officials about their menstrual cycles is causing some debate in Florida high schools. High school girls across the state of Florida would be required to respond to questions about their menstrual cycles on the preparticipation physical evaluation form that has been presented.

At this time, answering the questions is not required. Dr. Tommy Shechtman, a pediatrician and former president of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, stated that none of this is necessary in his opinion for the athletic department, the coach, or the state organization to have access to that information.

He also believed that it went beyond what HIPAA would typically permit. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises student-athletes to have a physical, but the national form indicates that it should be kept in the athlete’s medical file and shouldn’t be shared with schools or sports organizations.

Menstrual cycles may indicate additional problems, but Shechtman emphasized that this is something that should be discussed with the patient, the parent, and the doctor. The Florida High School Athletic Association is the overseeing nonprofit group for athletics at Florida public schools, according to state law.

Only four of the 16 board members are female. The state’s education commissioner is given a seat on this board, and his office appoints the other three members. The Florida High School Athletic Association has not yet commented on this suggested adjustment.
