According to the authorities, a person was struck and killed by a train that was operating on the Union Pacific West line that Metra operates, and the trains have been stopped near Elmhurst as a result.

A deadly pedestrian accident was reported in the neighbourhood of Cottage Hill Avenue and the adjoining Union Pacific Railroad Crossing around 3:46 p.m. on Monday, according to a tweet sent out by the city of Elmhurst. First responders were already on the site of the accident. It was requested that people stay away from the area as emergency personnel continued to work there.

Elmhurst first responders are on scene at Cottage Hill and the Union Pacific Railroad Crossing for a fatal pedestrian train accident. Trains are stopped in both directions. Cottage Hill at the RR crossing & Park Ave between York & Cottage Hill are closed. Please avoid the area.

At the railroad crossing, both Cottage Hill and Park Avenue were shut down, as was the section of Park Avenue that ran between York Street and Cottage Hill Avenue.

Metra announced in a separate tweet at 3:19 pm that one of its trains, Train No. 52, had hit a pedestrian and halted both inbound and outbound train movement close to Elmhurst because of the incident. Commuters were warned by the transit agency to brace themselves for “severe delays,” which the organisation estimated might last anywhere from one to three hours.
