Mama Coco, a Disney Pixar animated film, is reported to have been inspired by a Mexican woman who died at the age of 109.

Mara Salud Ramrez Caballero, a resident of Mexico who is thought to have served as the model for the grandmother figure in the animated film Coco, was buried in Santa Fe de la Laguna, Michoacán, on October 16.

Roberto Monroy, Michoacán’s secretary of tourism, announced her loss on Twitter without disclosing the cause of death, honouring her as a “tireless woman and life model.”

He said in a tweet that was translated from Spanish, “I sincerely grieve the passing of Doa Mara Salud Ramrez Caballero, ‘Mamá Coco,’ a relentless woman and example of life, who was the inspiration for this beloved character who journeyed across the world.

According to TMZ, Disney/Pixar has never explicitly stated if Caballero served as the model for the movie’s Caballero character. However, the filming team went to her town, spent time with her family, and took a lot of pictures of her. She was known as “Mama Coco” in her birthplace, where she worked as a clay artist, in honour of the film character.
