After running a red light and colliding with another vehicle early on Sunday morning, killing the other motorist, Denver police allege in a probable cause affidavit that Coban Porter, brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr., smelled of alcohol and was slurring his speech.
A University of Denver basketball player named Coban Porter, age 21, was arrested early Sunday morning on vehicular homicide and reckless driving in connection with a tragic incident near the junction of South University and Buchtel boulevards.
According to the affidavit, police in Denver allege that Coban Porter was traveling east on East Buchtel Boulevard at a speed of around 50 miles per hour when he blew a red light at South University Boulevard and collided with a vehicle traveling north on University.

Since the 22nd of November, Porter Jr. has been sidelined with a heel ailment that the team has been officially referring to as a contusion.

Michael Porter Jr Car Accident: The Office of the Medical Examiner in Denver reports that 42-year-old Katharina Rothman was murdered. According to the coroner, she succumbed to injuries consistent with a fall. According to an affidavit acquired by The Denver Post on Monday, police claim that another passenger in her vehicle was also critically hurt.
Because of its proximity to the University of Denver, the crossroads in question has a 30 mph speed limit posted. In the partially redacted affidavit, Corporal Aaron Botts described Coban Porter’s “bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred and muttering speech, and the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.” On his left wrist was a paper bracelet that read “Bud Light.”

Coban Porter had blood drawn by investigators to check his BAC; the results are still forthcoming, Botts added. The police say that Coban was taken into custody right away. At around 4 p.m. on Sunday, he was taken into custody and released on a $20,000 bond, per the Denver Sheriff’s Office.
Before joining the University of Denver men’s basketball program in 2021, Coban played for Father Tolton Catholic in Columbia, Missouri, and Link Prep in Branson, Missouri. He started 28 of the Pioneers’ 39 games as a freshman last year. He hurt himself in the offseason and hasn’t been able to join his squad in preseason drills. He is currently enrolled at DU and still active on the roster.
