Michelle Yeoh, PSM (/jo/ YOH; born August 6, 1962) is a Malaysian actress best known for her appearances in Ang Lee’s Academy Award-winning martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). (2000) At the beginning of her career in Hong Kong films, Yeoh was given the role of Michelle Khan.
The 20-year-old Yeoh, who was raised in the Perak state capital of Ipoh, won the Miss Malaysia contest in 1983. When she starred as a stuntwoman in Hong Kong action films like Yes, Madam (1985), Supercop (1992), and Holy Weapon (1993), she rose to recognition in the early 1990s and became an international star (1993). A BAFTA Award nomination for her performance in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon earned her a nod.
Early life and education
Born on August 6, 1962, Yeoh was raised by Malaysian Chinese of Hokkien and Cantonese descent in Ipoh. Both Janet and Yeoh Kian-teik (who passed away on November 5, 2014) were lawyers and MCA politicians, and Yeoh Kian-teik was the man behind the well-known Sri Maju express bus service.
Yeoh began ballet at the age of four, and she has been dancing ever since. As a primary student, she attended Ipoh’s Main Convent Ipoh, an all-girls secondary school. She traveled to the United Kingdom with her parents at the age of 15 to attend a boarding school. Yeoh went on to major in ballet at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, England. Her professional ballet dancing aspirations were dashed due to a spinal injury, so she shifted her focus to choreography and other creative endeavors. She went on to earn a BA in Creative Arts with a concentration in Drama.

Personal life
From 1988 to 1992, Yeoh was married to Hong Kong businessman Dickson Poon, who owned Harvey Nichols and Charles Jourdan. Alan Heldman, a cardiologist from the United States, proposed to Yeoh in 1998. Since then, she has been dating Jean Todt, the former CEO and General Manager of Scuderia Ferrari and the current president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA). During an appearance on CBS’s The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in July 2008, she announced her engagement to him.
Yeoh is a Buddhist monk. A documentary for the Asian Injury Prevention Foundation was shot in Vietnam in March 2008. Save China’s Tigers, an organization dedicated to preserving the endangered South China tiger, has Yeoh as a patron.
