It appears like Microsoft has begun testing a new look for OneNote. Since last year, Microsoft has been hinting that OneNote and OneNote for Windows 10 will be combined into a single OneNote app. Some of the new OneNote design modifications are now available to traditional desktop OneNote beta testers.

The new design makes OneNote more compatible with the Windows 11 look and feel. The page list, section tabs, and notebook dropdown all get new looks, as do the navigation windows and full-screen mode. The general program window of OneNote is adorned with Microsoft’s Mica effect, which is featured in the Windows 11 theme and desktop wallpaper.

According to Windows Latest, OneNote has undergone a lot of modifications in the last few years. OneNote’s original and feature-rich version was removed from the pre-installed Office products in 2018 when Microsoft truly wanted users to adopt their UWP version of OneNote. When Microsoft released a new version of the UWP client instead, it merely added new functionality to an existing version.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 users will see a series of significant feature upgrades over the coming few months as Microsoft tries to merge the many versions of the OneNote app into a single client. As time passed, Microsoft shifted its focus to the Win32 platform as well. Microsoft’s treatment of the Win32 client dissatisfied users who preferred features over the app’s UWP nature and look, which prompted the company to reintroduce the Win32 version in Office 2019 or 365.

So, we’ve got a Win32 version of OneNote and a UWP version, both of which are simply referred to as “OneNote.” There hasn’t been much progress on either the Win32 or UWP versions recently as the company tries to maintain two apps. UWP OneNote was ditched in favor of integrating the best of both programs into an updated version for the Win32 version.

When Will the New OneNote Be Available?

This weekend, Microsoft quietly started distributing early versions of the new OneNote design to beta testers. According to a Microsoft insider, the update is already being rolled out to Office Insiders in the Beta Channel.

Features of the New OneNote

According to Windows Latest, the update features a new sidebar UI structure and a visual change to reflect the design of Windows 11. Syncing has been much improved because of the revamped sidebar which shows all parts as well as notebooks. Softened corners can be seen all around the app, making it more responsive.

Ruler, a feature formerly accessible only in “OneNote (UWP) for Windows 10,” is now available in OneNote Win32 on touch-enabled devices. In addition to these enhancements, the UWP edition lacks touch and pen functionality as well as other features.

When the Win32 version of OneNote receives all of the UWP capabilities and can be used on touch-enabled devices, users of the UWP version will begin receiving in-app invites to switch to the new OneNote app. Replace OneNote on Windows 10 and elsewhere with a newer version of OneNote, according to the firm (Win32).
