Happy Monday, Utah! The wild and windy weather from the weekend has stuck around for the start of the new week. Our mountain areas have been getting a lot of snow. In the last 24 hours, ski resorts have seen anywhere from 8 to 20 inches of new snow.
Nordic Valley in Huntsville, which got 20 inches of new snow this morning, is the big winner this morning. This adds a lot of snow to their base, which is already 24 inches deep. Alta, Snowbird, and Snowbasin have all said they have between 14 and 17 inches of new snow. Great day to go skiing! A Winter Storm Warning is still in place until Tuesday at 5 p.m., which means that the Northern Mountains could get another 6 to 12 inches of snow.
In the valley, a strong south wind kept it warm until Sunday night. This slowed down the change from rain to snow. Because of the delay, less snow fell than expected in Salt Lake County and Utah County. As colder air moved in, it snowed more north of Salt Lake. Several inches of snow fell in Centerville and north along I-15. A Winter Weather Advisory is still in effect for the Wasatch Front until 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The valleys could get between 1 and 4 inches of snow, while the Benches could get between 2 and 6 inches. As the trough of low pressure moves through the state, it will continue to bring rain to Northern Utah.

As moisture from the north moves in tonight and Tuesday morning, the Wasatch Front will have the best chance of getting more snow. Early in the cold season, when very cold air moves over the Great Salt Lake, we can usually expect some kind of lake-enhanced snowfall. As the polar airmass moves into Utah through the middle of the week, temperatures will drop 10-15 degrees below normal. However, the temperature of the lake has already dropped to the point where lake-effect snowfall is not likely. On Tuesday, it will be hard to get above freezing during the day, and on Wednesday it will be even colder.
Most of the rain will stop by Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. For the rest of the week, the wind will come from the north and be dry and very cold. In the valleys of northern Utah, daytime highs will be in the mid to upper 20s, and nighttime lows will be in the teens. As the storm is almost over in St. George, the weather in southern Utah won’t change much from day to day. The highs will be cooler than usual, in the lows 40s, and the lows will be in the 20s.
Bottom line? Northern Utah will get more snow showers, while Southern Utah will dry out.
