When Kaitlin Armstrong was on the run from murder accusations related to the death of professional cyclist Mo Wilson, she drastically changed her look, possibly even going so far as to get cosmetic surgery. On May 11 in Austin, Texas, Armstrong, 34, allegedly shot and killed Wilson. After being questioned by authorities, Armstrong vanished, setting off a massive manhunt for the fugitive that was finally successful last Wednesday  when Armstrong was apprehended at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in the province of Puntarenas.

Armstrong’s attempts to conceal her identity were discovered after she was taken into custody. Her unique reddish-curly hair had been shortened and coloured dark. Armstrong allegedly used a different person’s passport to board United Airlines Flight 1222 on May 18 from Newark International Airport to San Jose, Costa Rica, according to Marshals Service and Homeland Security investigators. Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon Filla claimed Armstrong “resembled” the person in the passport at a press conference last week, but he did not elaborate on how she came into possession of it.

“She resembled that person quite a bit, stated Filla. “So that was a fraudulent use of it, but since it was granted to a specific person, it wasn’t fraudulent in and of itself.” Armstrong had bandages and bruises on her face when she was taken into custody, which Filla claimed she attributed to a “surfing mishap.” Her eyes are bruised in her booking photo, and her nose tip looks thinner than in earlier shots. According to Inside Edition, it looked at a receipt for a cosmetic surgery centre in San Rafael de Escazu, Costa Rica, that was discovered among Armstrong’s luggage at the hostel where she was staying.

According to marshals, one of the main ways they found Armstrong was by looking up nearby yoga studios and checking to see if Armstrong enrolled in any classes. Once she arrived in Costa Rica, Filla claimed, “she didn’t really move around much.” “We anticipated that she would work with a yoga studio of some kind. They did discover a handwritten login that was the same identity she was using when she travelled to Costa Rica when foreign officials came at that yoga school. Once they discovered that pattern, it truly let them in, and they sped up their pursuit of Kaitlin Armstrong. Marshals think Armstrong, a Texas-based yoga teacher and real estate agent, was getting ready to teach yoga again in Costa Rica. According to Filla, “She was truly eager to develop that next chapter of her career.”

The Marshals Service claims that Armstrong killed champion mountain biker Wilson, 25, of San Francisco, who had been living and working there since 2019. Wilson was staying with a friend in Austin on May 11 while he got ready for a race. The following evening, she allegedly went swimming with Wilson’s claimed ex-girlfriend and fellow racing participant Colin Strickland. Wilson was later discovered by her companion at the apartment, bleeding profusely, unconscious, and shot many times in the torso. First responders pronounced Wilson dead at the scene.

According to the authorities, jealousy was the murder’s driving force. An arrest warrant issued on May 19 detailed the intricate details of the alleged love triangle-turned-murder, including recently acquired guns, text messages, falsehoods, and an anonymous tipster. According to the request, an unnamed caller claimed that after Armstrong learned that Strickland and Wilson were dating, she “got upset and was shaking with anger” and declared her want to kill Wilson.

Armstrong was flown back to Texas on Saturday following her detention in Costa Rica. Armstrong is detained at the Travis County Jail and is being held on a $3.5 million bond, per the Travis County Sheriff’s Office records. The date of the hearing is July 20.
