Neal Kumar Katyal is a lawyer and academic from the United States who was born on March 12, 1970. He is a member of Hogan Lovells and the Paul and Patricia Saunders Professor of National Security Law at Georgetown University Law Center. Under the Obama administration, Katyal served as the United States’ acting solicitor general from May 2010 until June 2011.
Katyal previously worked as a lawyer in the United States Department of Justice’s Office of the Solicitor General and as its Principal Deputy Solicitor General. In 2022, he joined the board of Social Capital Ventures Inc. and is a partner in Chamath Palihapitiya Social+capital Partnership.

Neal Katyal Children
Neal Katyal and Joanna Rosen, his long-term wife, have three boys. However, because the couple is well-known in politics and the general public, they have chosen to keep their children out of the spotlight.

President Bill Clinton commissioned him to draft a report on the need for more pro bono legal work. In 1999, he enacted special counsel laws, which affected Mueller’s probe into the Russian government’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
He also represented Vice President Al Gore in Bush v. Gore and the deans of the vast majority of prestigious private law schools in Grutter v. Bollinger. In 2017, Katyal was named the Grand Prize Litigator of the Year by American Lawyer Magazine for 2016 and 2017. Katyal has been chastised for submitting anti-union petitions in the Supreme Court cases Janus v. AFSCME and Epic Systems Corp. v. Lewis. Katyal’s achievement in these cases was deemed a “huge gain” by her firm, Hogan Lovells.
In Nestlé USA, Inc. v. Doe, a class-action lawsuit brought by formerly enslaved children kidnapped and forced to labor on cocoa estates in the Ivory Coast, Katyal defended Nestle and Cargill before the Supreme Court. In 2021, Katyal assisted Citigroup in its attempt to recoup a $900 million miscalculation that had been passed to Revlon Inc. creditors.
Katyal also supported the prosecution in State v. Chauvin. In Moore v. Harper, a 2022 Supreme Court case involving election law, redistricting, and the independent state legislative theory, Katyal represented the respondents.
