On Friday, a possible drunk driver swerved into oncoming lanes and collided head-on with the car of a 73-year-old man on Route 59 near Lake Villa.
Around 9:50 p.m. on Friday, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Villa Fire Protection District responded to a report of a car crash with injuries on Route 59 south of Route 132 in unincorporated Lake Villa.

According to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli, when sheriff’s deputies arrived, they discovered a GMC Acadia and a Kia Sorento with significant damage. According to an initial inquiry, the GMC, which was being driven by a 74-year-old Lake Villa man, was heading north on Route 59.
For an unknown reason, the GMC’s driver entered the southbound lanes of traffic, according to Covelli.
A 73-year-old Ingleside man was driving the southbound Kia when the GMC slammed it head-on. Critical injuries were sustained by both drivers when they were taken by EMS to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Covelli added that immediately after the Kia’s driver arrived at the hospital, he was pronounced dead. The GMC’s driver is still in severe condition at the hospital.

According to Covelli, witnesses claimed the GMC was swerving before the collision. Covelli continued, “Impairment looks to be a component in the incident, but the inquiry is still open.
The Kia’s driver will be subjected to an autopsy, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team is still looking into the collision.
