BEACON, Orange County (WABC) — A man who was trying to get to a safer location after his car broke down on an Orange County bridge fell to his death through a break in the asphalt on Tuesday night. The accident occurred on the bridge.
According to the New York State Police, the victim, identified as Paul Montenero, 29, of Poughkeepsie, was operating his car in the direction of eastbound travel on Interstate 84 just before 10 p.m. when it became disabled on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
According to the authorities, Montenero got out of his car and tried to use the pedestrian walkway that was positioned next to the roadway after he had already crossed the street.

However, in his haste to get to a safer location, he ultimately ended up falling through a space that existed between the road and the walkway for pedestrians.
The body of Montenero was located and brought to the surface by the Orange County Technical Rescue Team.
The inquiry is still underway, but there is no reason to infer criminal activity at this time.
