What caused Norma Hunt’s death? The 85-year-old matriarch of the Kansas City Chiefs passed suddenly a few months after the Super Bowl, but how did she pass away?
Even though the Kansas City Chiefs won the 2022 Super Bowl (which was played in 2023) on June 4, 2023, a significant individual passed away. As the Chiefs’ founding member and attendance at all 57 Super Bowls, Norma Hunt is regarded as their grandmother. Given that she played a crucial role in the founding of the Chiefs and Dallas FC, Norma’s blood runs thick across both the NFL and the MLS.
Norma passed away shortly after she witnessed the Chiefs win their third Super Bowl, adding to their victories in 1969 and 2019. She is the current mother of Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt in addition to being the team’s matriarch and the widow of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt. But what specifically killed Norma Hunt?
Norma Hunt Cause Of Death
Lamar Hunt wed his second wife, Norma Lynn Knobel, a teacher at the time, in 1964. Before the Dallas Texans became the Kansas City Chiefs, she worked as a hostess for them. Lamar has two children, Lamar Jr. and Sharron Hunt, from a former marriage to Rosemary Carr, however, neither desired to take over the family business.
When Lamar Hunt passed away in 2006, Clark Hunt, the son of Lamar and Norma, was appointed CEO and Chairman. Daniel Hunt, their younger son, is also actively involved in the family business. Norma would be sorely missed in the Super Bowl the following year because she is one of the very few people who has been to every game.

Norma owned the Chiefs equally with each of Lamar’s children until her passing. The Chiefs were made aware of Norma Hunt’s passing by the Hunt family. “Kind, generous, and unfailingly positive, Mom was one of a kind,” the statement read. Her enthusiasm for life and joy were contagious.
I’ll never forget Norma Hunt speaking after the Chiefs beat the Titans in the AFCCG before winning Super Bowl LIV. Reunited with Lamar. ❤️

She cherished providing for others, and she never failed to offer supportive words. She was a devoted friend, the ideal hostess, and she possessed a special talent for making everyone she came into contact with feel important and at ease.
“Mom was extremely passionate about her family’s sports teams and staunchly committed to her family. She supported our father Lamar through every step of the process, through the AFL and NFL merger, the creation of Major League Soccer, the North American Soccer League, the World Championship Tennis, and their initial investment in the Chicago Bulls. Only she, as far as we were aware, shared his passion for athletics. Whether at home or in stadium stands all across the world, the two of them had tremendous delight together.
People who knew Norma quickly expressed their sympathy and statements. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote, “The entire NFL family is deeply saddened by the passing of Norma Hunt, who was a significant presence in the NFL for the last seven decades. I was fortunate to know Norma for nearly 40 years and was always struck by her warmth and grace, her partnership with Lamar, and her pride in their family. Norma’s sense of family extended to the Chiefs’ organization which she greatly adored.”
“Mrs. Norma was the best. Glad to be a part of this special organization she help build. She will be missed! Prayers to the entire Hunt family,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said.

Even Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes tweeted, “Mrs. Norma was the best. Glad to be a part of this special organization she helped build. She will be missed! Prayers to the entire Hunt family.” While we await her cause of death announcement, at 85 years old, we imagine that she may have died of natural causes. But until the coroner confirms, we’ll have to wait and see.
Her grandchildren Gracie, Knobel, and Ava as well as her sons Clark and Daniel survive her. We send our condolences to Norma’s friends, family, followers, and everyone else who knew her.
