In Lake and McHenry counties on Thursday evening, dozens of car accidents were reported due to the whiteout conditions brought on by snow showers. The National Weather Service predicted that sporadic snow showers would last into Thursday night a statement at 4:30 p.m.

According to the weather agency, the most intense snow showers will create quick bursts of snow mixed with gusty winds that would drastically decrease visibility. The NWS also predicted that certain roads might have snow coatings, with higher and less-used highways, particularly at risk.

“If you plan to go for a drive, go cautiously and be ready for rapidly changing circumstances in and around any heavy snow showers. Increase your following distance and slow down, the NWS advised.

According to an NWS report, the northern and far-northwest Chicago suburbs, including Lake County and McHenry County, experienced the strongest snow showers. Just after six o’clock in the evening, Lake County received reports of over a dozen automobile collisions over 30 minutes.

The areas around Lake Forest, Vernon Hills, Mundelein, Wauconda, and Island Lake appeared to have the most hazardous weather and traffic conditions. In McHenry County, the areas around Woodstock, Harvard, and Prairie Grove proved to have the weather and traffic circumstances that were the most hazardous.
