Ottoman Season 2: Cem Yiit Üzümolu and Tommaso Basili star in the documentary-style film Rise of Empires: Ottoman, which is set in Turkey and chronicles the history of the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman Season 2 Storyline
The first of the show’s six episodes finds Mehmet, newly crowned emperor after his father’s death, desperate to win over the people after a series of rebellions rock the empire. To this end, he sets his sights on Constantinople, often known as the “Butterfly City,” which served as a Roman-controlled crossing point between Asia and Europe. The series then details the events leading up to the fight and the subsequent challenges that Mehmet II faced in the field and at home.
From the innovative use of ships to navigate spy-filled woodlands to cannons (8-meter-long “Basilica” in the first episode) to attack city walls, a wealth of information is worth your time. Ottoman, like Hannibal and The Punic Wars before it, is essentially a tutorial in military warfare, and it does a great job of demonstrating this throughout the series.
The story is driven by a rotating cast of passionate narrators who do a fantastic job of expanding upon the action and providing context for what’s going on. Similarly to the treatment of the aforementioned Last Czars, these are intercut with real-life interviews. The exaggerated mannerisms, unyielding passion, and excellent colloqualistic vocabulary of local favorite Celal Cengal make him a fan favorite. That’s not to discount the other characters, but I feel he’ll be one of your favorites by the end of the season.
Seeing the screen filled with shades of blood red is both a cruelly ironic symbol of the bloodshed that went into the conquest of this city and an informative guide as to how the Ottomans accomplished this feat, and there are a lot of animations, expository text, and diagrams that help paint a portrait. Although there is considerable background on Mehmed’s past, the series primarily focuses on this epic conflict.
Some glaring flaws ruin the good times. After such a great explanation of the significance of this victory, the final scene, in which Mehmed II runs his hands through the corn, feels like it was lifted straight from Gladiator. In the finale, Mehmed looks directly at the camera, smiles, and says, “Now it begins,” which is a bit of a cheesy way to end things. Although the cameraman’s shaky technique of cutting back and forth between different angles of the same person’s face several times is irritating, the personal nature of the narration makes up for it.
Despite a few minor issues, Rise of Empires: Ottoman is an exciting and instructive series on a period I know very little about. In contrast to The Last Czars, the dramatic reenactments sensibly devote a sizable portion of the performance to the actual fighting and action. In the end, this is good for Ottomans. Maybe Netflix will keep this up, especially since the History Channel no longer seems interested in airing these documentaries. Even though it has specific problems, Ottoman is an improvement over The Last Czars and an exciting addition to Netflix’s burgeoning documentary library because of its focus on battle and its six episodes.
