Abbreviated as KimiSen, the title comes from Kei Sazane and Ao Nekonabe’s Japanese light novel series Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World (Hepburn: Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senj, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen). Kadokawa Corporation’s Fujimi Shobo imprint has released thirteen novels and three collections of short stories under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko label since May 2017.
May 2018–March 2021 saw the serialization in Hakusensha’s Young Animal magazine of a manga adaption by okama. Yen Press is responsible for licensing the light novel and manga in the United States and Canada. Silver Link adapted the manga into an anime TV series that ran from October 2020 to December 2020. The debut of season two is scheduled for the year 2023.
Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World Season 1 Reviews
A number of Kei Sazane’s light novels have been adapted into manga over the past decade, but this appears to be the first of his works to be published in English or announced for impending animation. It’s not surprising that this work was picked up because it clearly shows an understanding of how to play to an otaku target audience, with its se*y girls, sensitive sword-using guys, lots of flashy action and magic, and developing romance, all set on a world designed specifically to exploit all of these elements.
The two main teens are influential figures in their feuding states, and they fall in love while knowing that they should be at each other’s throats. The tale takes a twist on the classic Romeo and Juliet scenario. However, their disagreement isn’t just a matter of nationality; it’s also a fight between science and magic. The majority of the book’s 214 pages are spent on Iska and Alice trying to make sense of their developing feelings for one other after a series of fortuitous encounters, rather than a straightforward “love at first sight” plot.
Iska, who was never an astral power hater, to begin with, is impressed by Alice’s looks, and Alice, who is won over more by Iska’s kindness and actions, arrives at the same conclusion, but from different perspectives. Both share an appreciation for the arts and music, and they seem to find each other intuitively when they are ultimately up against a shared adversary.
The novel’s full-color illustrations are, arguably, its greatest strength. On the cover, Alice is depicted in all her sensual glory, and on the opening glossy double-fold page, Alice, Iska, and their closest friends are shown on one side, while on the other, Alice is depicted in an unspecified state of nudity during a swimming scenario. It would be more impressive if there were color pictures throughout.
Suzanne spent nearly two years writing the first novel in the series, and he struggled the most with naming it, as he admits in the book’s lengthy Afterword. Overall, Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World is an unremarkable piece of literature that manages to be enjoyable because of its intriguing subject. The connection between the title and the plot is unclear at this stage, but maybe this will be clarified in later volumes.
