The next Paramore era has officially commenced with the Nashville-based band releasing “This Is Why,” its first new single (and music) since 2017. The band also announced that Atlantic Records would release their sixth studio album on February 10, 2019.
“Entering back into a world — and cultural landscape — significantly different from the one they last participated in, Paramore have returned with a song about just that,” reads the single’s press release.
This is Why” was the very last song we wrote for the album. To be completely honest, I was getting really sick of writing lyrics, but Taylor persuaded Zac and me that we needed to finish this last idea. Frontwoman Hayley Williams explains that the resulting song became the album’s title track.”

It captures the profusion of absurd emotions, the rollercoaster of being alive in 2022, having survived even only the last three or four years. After a worldwide pandemic of fucking biblical proportions and the impending doom of a dying planet, you’d think that people would have found it in themselves to be kinder or more empathetic or something.
Williams made a lengthy announcement on the band’s Discord server. Williams declares, “If you have an opinion, maybe you should shove it” to kick off “This Is Why,” which is driven by a bouncing bassline.
The video accompaniment to “This Is Why” was released today as well. All three members of the popular group, Zac Farro, Taylor York, and Williams, appear in the earthy music video directed by Brendan Yates of Turnstile and shot in Malibu last month.
Williams comments on the video and the teamwork, saying, “It was so cool working with Brendan. I’ve known the Turnstile folks for a little while and was so pleased to have our worlds cross in this way. We share a lot of similarities in the way we run our bands… I’m hoping we’ll get to share the stage with them sometime soon.
The album was recorded in Los Angeles with longtime producer Carlos de la Garza and features ten new Paramore songs, with cover art by Zachary Gray. This will be the band’s first tour in nearly four years, and it kicks off next week in anticipation of the album’s February release.
The tour will kick off on October 2 at the Mechanics Bank Theater in Bakersfield, California, and will continue through November 13 at the Beacon Theater in New York City, which has been described as an “intimate” performance. Part of the proceeds from their shows will go to charities like ARC Southeast, the Kansas Abortion Funds, Shelter Safe Canada, and Support and Feed.
