McKeon passed away in Texas on Tuesday morning following a long struggle with an unidentified disease, according to a statement released by family spokesperson Jeff Ballard to The Hollywood Reporter.
“We are all beyond heartbroken and devastated over Phil’s passing,” said Ballard. “His wonderful sense of humour, kindness and loyalty will be remembered by all who crossed his path in life.”

The actor played Tommy Hyatt on Alice from 1976 to 1985. He is the older brother of former Facts of Life star Nancy McKeon. Alfred Lutter played Alice’s (Ellen Burstyn) son in the original film adaptation of Martin Scorsese’s 1974 romantic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. After the pilot, McKeon took over for Lutter in the role.
In addition to his roles on CHiPs and Fantasy Island, he also guest-starred on The Love Boat and Return to Horror High. McKeon relocated to Wimberly, Texas, to be with his family and conduct a radio show there for several years.
He spent the prior decade serving as a newscaster for Los Angeles’s KFWB-AM. McKeon’s mother, Barbara, and his sister are left behind.
