Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes), the wayward daughter of Picard (Patrick Stewart), returned unexpectedly and viscerally in Episode 5 of Star Trek: Picard Season 3 as Starfleet arrived to deal with Picard and Riker’s (Jonathan Frakes) disobedience aboard the Titan. In the ensuing episode, Picard and Ro discuss the chaotic state their relationship was left in after she left Starfleet to join the Maquis in the penultimate episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It is a beautifully intimate thriller. Maggie Lovitt from Collider sat down with Picard Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas to discuss this pivotal moment in the Next Gen journey prior to the most recent episode.
Lovitt asked Matalas and the Season 3 authors if this was always the goal for the season or if any other characters were ever considered for this emotional story point. Lovitt emphasized how ideal it was to bring back Ro Laren for this scene. But Matalas answered, “No, this story was always Ro Laren,” revealing that what actually happened was what was always intended to happen.
The pitch for this episode, according to Matalas, was a “paranoia thriller” involving someone with whom you have a lot of emotional baggage. As long as they could get Forbes to come back and persuade the studio that this was a story worth telling, it would always be Ro Laren, he explained. Who Is Ro Laren?
Ro Laren was first presented in The Next Generation’s fifth season as a fiery and frequently contentious Bajoran Starfleet officer who joined the Enterprise as a last-ditch effort to avoid going to jail after a court martial. In her early years on the Enterprise, she and Picard frequently disagreed, but by the conclusion of her time there, they had established a father-daughter relationship, with him expressing tremendous pleasure in how much she had changed. The last time we saw these two on screen, however, Ro’s decision to follow her heart and join the Maquis (a rebel militia force battling the Cardassians—an extraterrestrial species that colonized Bajor and killed 15 million Bajorans) caused a rather irreparable gap between herself and Picard.
In order to learn the truth and stop an enemy intent on destroying the Federation, Ro Laren, posing as a Section 31 spy looking into the Changelings’ infiltration of Starfleet, must cooperate with Picard to overcome their shared pain. The heart-pounding thriller that “Imposters” presents is made possible by Ro’s history in espionage and her emotional connection to Picard. Ro is the ideal person to tell this narrative. On Paramount+, new episodes of Star Trek: Picard Season 3 are released every Thursday. When Episode 5 premieres, make sure to watch Lovitt’s whole conversation with Matalas.
