IN LAKE COUNTY – The Indiana State Police have confirmed that two people have died following a high-speed collision on I-80 in Lake County. Troopers responded to a multi-vehicle incident on I-80/94 eastbound close to the 5.7 mile-marker, between Cline Avenue and Burr Street, on Sunday just before 1 a.m. Police said a silver 2011 Honda Pilot was rear-ended by a blue 2021 Chevrolet Camaro that was moving fast east. The Honda was driven into the median wall by the initial collision.
The red 2000 Ford Mustang was struck by the Camaro as it traveled further to the right side of the street. The Ford was forced against the outer sound barrier wall, which was on the right side of the road, by the second impact. The Camaro also slammed into the outer sound barrier, igniting upon impact. Two people were discovered dead inside the Camaro after the Gary Fire Department was able to put out the fire. The Lake County Coroner’s Office will notify the deceased’s next of kin after releasing their names. Neither the Honda nor Ford’s drivers were hurt in the collision.
When Ford’s driver, 43-year-old Scott Kennedy of Crown Point, Indiana, displayed signs of intoxication at the scene, authorities conducted an O.W.I. investigation. A Lake County Judge signed a search warrant for a blood draw after the motorist refused to submit to a chemical test. At Northlake Hospital, this warrant was carried out. After that, Kennedy was taken to the Lake County Jail, where charges are awaiting the consent of the prosecutor. The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, Double T Towing, Precision Towing, Lake County Coroner, Gary Fire and EMS, and INDOT all provided assistance on the scene.
