After allegedly abandoning her kids at a gas station overnight this weekend, a mother in Lady Lake is now facing felony charges of child negligence. April Maxwell, 39, is currently being held in the Lake County Prison after police claim she left two kids at a Circle K for around eight hours while they appeared neglected and filthy. That evening’s gas station employee claimed it took him some time to notice the mother had got up and departed.
According to the arrest affidavit, she informed officers that she thought the man was a friend because she had visited the gas station. Tanner Archer remarked, “She just vanished. “I probably should have done something, like phoned the cops. But as I’ve already stated, I’m not in the family dissolution business.” Thus, according to Archer, he kept an eye on them.
He claimed, “I hung around with them, and we played games as I attempted to get things done and service clients. They created some adorable drawings for me. Hours went by. For the entire evening, their mother was absent. The kids were left at the shop between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to the Lady Lake police arrest report.
Archer said the mom still hadn’t arrived when my boss arrived at 6 a.m. “She made a police call.” Police discovered a man dozing off outside the gas station in a golf cart, according to the arrest report. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to wake him up, he finally answered, saying he minded the kids and was Maxwell’s friend. She arrived 45 minutes after he got in touch with her.

She allegedly admitted to leaving two of her kids at the gas station while she and another child traveled to a Wawa in a different county to fill the tire on her golf cart. According to the report, the two children left behind were unclean and sleep-deprived, and “it was obvious they were suffering from neglect.”
Archer remarked, “They were filthy. But all night, I kept buying them food and supplies. According to the arrest record, Maxwell was sought after when the Department of Children and Families was contacted because of earlier incidents. The investigation claims Maxwell declined to submit to a drug test when it was requested.
Simply allowing the child to fall asleep in his arms, Archer said. I moved the two other children and the child I was holding to the opposite side of the store when I saw the mother was about to be handcuffed, so they wouldn’t have to witness the incident. Archer alleges the incident caused him to lose his job. But the children who were placed into DCF custody are his biggest worry.

“As I got them into her car and told the kind lady who had picked them up not to separate them, she complied. They require one another, “said he. Circle K was contacted by WESH 2 for comment, but as of Tuesday night, no response has been received. According to the arrest report, DCF will request a custody hearing in court. On April 10, Maxwell is scheduled to be presented in court.
