TOWN OF MAPLE GROVE, WI (WLUK) — TOWN OF MAPLE GROVE, WI An investigation into an explosion that occurred during a bonfire in Maple Grove is still being carried out.
It is believed that approximately thirty current and former students from the Pulaski school district were hurt in the explosion that took place on Friday night.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office was unable to provide a definitive answer on the number of people who were injured or the degree of their burns.
Mike Vandenavond, who works for the Green Bay Metro Fire Department, recommends that people keep the size of their bonfires modest.
According to Vandenavond, “every time it gets bigger, out of the container you keep it in, you’re going to have concerns with people either falling in or the fire falling on them.”
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office issued the following statement in a press release: “An accelerant was used to the fire, which caused the fire to grow out of control. A number of people required medical assistance because they had sustained burn injuries.
Jen Ziech, the aunt of a sufferer, stated that “they informed us that it will get worse before it gets any better.”

Ziech has launched a GoFundMe campaign in order to raise money for her nephew Brandon, who she claims sustained significant burns as a result of the incident.
According to Ziech, Brandon witnessed two children tossing a container of gasoline onto the flames.
“Brandon was on fire, and his buddy Sam who was next to him helped him, rolled him, and put out the fire,” said Ziech. “The fire was put out by rolling Brandon.” There were a number of additional children who were on fire.
According to Vandenavond, “people use gasoline or the improper accelerant, and it becomes virtually a bomb because it will burst and shoot everything in the fire out,” which is what happens when people use gasoline.
There has been the creation of a new GoFundMe page for an additional student who was harmed in the fire. He goes by the name Issac.
According to Isaac’s mother, Julie Nelson, her kid will be required to stay at the burn centre for a period of two weeks. As a result of the severe burns that cover 21% of his body, he will require repeated skin transplants in order to have the damage repaired.
Ziech stated that they had learned that between six and seven patients had been flown to the burn centre in Milwaukee.
In the event that your campfire is on the verge of going out, Vandenavond offers more secure techniques to reignite it.
Vandenavond advised individuals to start the fire with kindling, matches, and paper. “We advise people to use all three,” he said. “Begin on a small scale and gradually increase the fire’s intensity, but avoid using any accelerants.”
Ziech reports that Brandon’s condition is stable and that the healing process has just started.
After making contact with the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office, FOX 11 was informed that the investigation is ongoing and that the department will not be providing any other information at this time.
