Rachel Catherine (Lee) Shaw, age 90, passed away in her home on Monday, February 28, 2022, surrounded by her beloved family. Her family wishes to express their deepest condolences to her friends and loved ones as they share the news.
She was the daughter of the late Arthur Shaw and Elizabeth (Lee) Shaw and was born in Glace Bay on October 3, 1931. Her parents both passed away.
Rachel raised her five children while she was a stay-at-home mom for many years. She was well-known throughout Table Head for the delectable fudge that she made. Rachel was a very involved part of her community, belonging to organisations such as the Reserve Pensioner’s Club, Friends of Seaview Manor, and St. Leo’s Parish Ladies Auxiliary. Rachel had been a devoted member of the NDP for her whole adult life. Bingo and a nice game of 45s were two of her favourite pastimes.
Her five children, Nina (Kevin) Kirby, Kathy (Greg) Thiel, Rick (Kathy), Brian (Charlotte), and Nancy (Pat) Harroun, are the ones who will carry on her legacy once she passes away. Gram was a term of endearment that she was given by her grandchildren Rebekah (Billy) Dixon, Mackenzie (Amanda) Snow, Adam (Katie) Krewenki, Anita (Jeff) Keefe, Colin (Shauna) Shaw, Matthew (Bethany) Shaw, Kurt (Kathryn), and Lauren Simmons. Rachel was a doting great-grandmother to Isla and Cooper Dixon, Grace, Sophia, and Tyler Keefe, and Lucas and Emery Shaw. She was very proud of all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Richard “Apps,” Rachel’s husband, passed away prior to her passing. She was the sole member of her family to have made it through life, having been preceded in death by her siblings Murdeena, Margaret, Nora, Jim, Alex, Elizabeth, Emma, Edna, Charlene, and Arthur.
The family would like to express their gratitude to palliative care, the VON, and the home care ladies, notably Mary Anita, who served as her care coordinator and provided direction at every turn throughout the process. My sincere gratitude goes out to her personal caregivers, all of whom she adored and held in the highest regard. Pam and Mike, the paramedics, have my gratitude for their professionalism and their thoughtfulness.
