utchinson. The Republican panel said alleged crimes by Cheney warrant an official probe from the FBI.
In a post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump said he “totally” agreed with the GOP’s findings, hinting perhaps Cheney may even face legal repercussions as the Republican Party continued to punish those who opposed Trump’s narrative on the attack of the Capitol.
Republican Efforts to Rewrite the January 6 Narrative
The House GOP probe is part of an unrelenting narrative that the party has sought to diminish the role Trump played in the insurrection at the Capitol. As the Department of Justice prosecutes more than 1,500 rioters and indicts Trump on charges including conspiracy to overturn an election, this new GOP report places blame on Cheney and the members of the January 6 committee for fabricating evidence and distorting the truth.
But to Representative Barry Loudermilk, Republican of Georgia and chairman of the House Administration Committee, the party’s effort at accountability for January 6 about restoring trust in government institutions, his report has been furiously attacked by Democrats-most notably Cheney-who pushed back against Loudermilk’s claims and charged he had ignored basic facts.
Yet Cheney still clung fast to her view that Trump was essentially responsible for the insurrection-even when Republicans were trying to discredit the whole January 6 committee. Cheney, in defense, said the burden of the proof evidenced and testified one point after another, showing specific witness points, including Hutchinson, as an accessory or witness to very detailed, multiple aspects of Trump’s actions and directions on the day that an attack at the Capitol ensued.
