The American fantasy TV show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s book The Lord of the Rings and its appendices. The series was created by showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay for the streaming service Prime Video. It takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Amazon Studios, the Tolkien Estate, the Tolkien Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema are all involved in making it.

In November 2017, Amazon paid $250 million for the rights to make a TV show based on The Lord of the Rings. This means they have to make at least five seasons of the show, which will cost at least $1 billion. This would mean that it would be the most expensive TV show ever made. In July 2018, Payne and McKay were hired. The series is mostly based on the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, which talk about the Second Age. As part of Amazon’s deal with the Tolkien Estate, it is not a continuation of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies. Even so, the production tried to be like the movies by using a similar set, younger versions of the movie characters, and theme music by Howard Shore, who wrote the scores for both trilogies. The rest of the series’ music was written by Bear McCreary. A big group of actors from around the world were hired, and the first season was shot in New Zealand, where the movies were made, from February 2020 to August 2021. During that time, production stopped for a few months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon moved future seasons of production to the UK. The second season is set to start filming in October 2022.

Will Gandalf Be in Rings of Power?

Gandalf Be in Rings of Power its Not Confirmed Officially Yet

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series gives us our best look yet at the mysterious, raggedy guy we saw in the teasers. Even though it hasn’t been said for sure that he is Gandalf, I’m calling it: that’s Gandalf. That’s Gandalf coming to Middle-earth one Age early to hang out with hobbits while the rest of the cast is busy yelling, climbing ice cliffs, swinging swords, making rings, and getting completely confused by Sauron. And that’s one reason why the show might be good.

We already know that the showrunners change the timeline to tell a story that will work on TV. I’m fine with that; stupidly sticking to the rules is the way of small minds. The people in the teasers who look like hobbits are called harfoots. They are nomadic hobbit ancestors who, according to Vanity Fair, “meet a mysterious lost man whose origin promises to be one of the show’s most intriguing mysteries.”

Okay, but it’s Gandalf, and in the version of the story I’m constructing in my head, he crashes to Middle-earth like a meteor, is pulled from the flaming crater by a harfoot, imprints on them like a baby duck, spends some formative years hanging out with them and absorbing their hobbity values while trying to remember who he is and what he’s supposed to be doing, leads them to the Shire, and spends the next several thousand years making sure they’re safe and happy in between trying to coordinate the forces of Middle-earth against Sauron and his minions.

Will Gandalf Be in Rings of Power?

Yes, according to the official timeline (at least in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, which the show is based on), Gandalf and the other Wizards don’t show up until a thousand years into the Third Age. This is long after the making of the rings, the destruction of Nmenor, the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, and everything else. Hobbits first show up in the (fake) historical records around this time, but the Shire isn’t founded until TA 1600, and there’s no proof that Gandalf has anything to do with it.

But think about this: the hobbits, who live on the edges of the main story, are the heroes, and that’s the whole point of The Lord of the Rings. The fact that the showrunners told the story of Gandalf and the harfoots shows that they understand J.R.R. Tolkien. If everything is just Galadriel, Gil-galad, Ar-Pharazôn, and big alliances and betrayals, it’s not Lord of the Rings, no matter how closely it follows Tolkien’s timeline. It’s just like Lord of the Rings.

WHY NOT GANDALF IF IT’S NOT HIM?
Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe that’s not Gandalf; maybe it’s some unrelated raggedy guy they find in a crater. Maybe it’s one of the Blue Wizards, or maybe it’s just some guy. But if it’s not Gandalf, why not?

The Rings of Power is the most expensive TV show of all time (so far, lol), and the teasers show lots of big stuff: action Galadriel, Durin III, young RBF Elrond, various large battles, intact Dwarven cities, parkour, elves and dwarves of color, surly Aragorn-looking dudes, and so forth. I’m looking forward to all of that. I read The Silmarillion in high school and The Lord of the Rings in elementary school. The movies came out when I was a teen, which is prime “this is my personality” territory. I spent a substantial amount of time writing things in Tengwar. This is candy to me. But as cool as it’ll be to see more of the big stories of Middle-earth, I’m more excited for the small ones.
